Steve's List of Typing TutorsLast Updated: |

I started out teaching myself how to type Dvorakly (I didn't use a typing tutor). I just
remapped my keyboard, taped a picture of the Dvorak Keyboard on my monitor and started typing, adding 2 or 3 new letters each day. I typed a random line of letters, hit return and then retyped my random lines of letters. (Although looking back, it could be argued that typing "random" lines wasn't the best way to learn because it didn't "train" my fingers to quickly type common sequences). After 20 hours of doing that method, I had already surpassed my fastest Qwerty typing speed. At that point, I knew that I wanted to stick with the Dvorak Layout, so I went out and bought Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Version 5. I have been very happy with Mavis Beacon Version 5, and would recommend it for anyone who wants to learn the Dvorak Layout... but... be sure you buy Version 5 because their latest version (8) does not support Dvorak. Here is how you set up Version 5 to teach you dvorakly. 1st- you have to remap your keyboard. 2nd- When you start up Mavis Beacon V5, you need to go under preferences and then Choose "Dvorak". (Your only other choices are Qwerty and the Number Pad.) If you want to complain about Mavis 8 dropping Dvorak support, go to Mindscape's Webpage. I have not run into any problems since I switched to Dvorak.... even if I have to type on a non-dvorak keyboard. If I have to use a Qwerty board, I can still type about 35 wpm.... otherwise I can type dvorakly at about 70+wpm. If you are thinking about trying the Dvorak Layout... by all means: GIVE IT A CHANCE. Try it for a month, if you aren't happy with it at the end of the month, you can easily switch back to Qwerty. (But my guess is that you won't want to.)
"But I don't have time to relearn how to type" -- All it takes is about 30 minutes a day for a month. Watch TV 30 minutes less a day and you'll be set. After a month, you'll probably start to "regain" time... and then you can watch all the TV you want. . . |
