In many cases the user application refers to web-enabling a custom device. The device may be any data acquisition equipment that represents a source of data to some external processing device or media. It seems to be very convenient if the media would be Internet and the data received from device would be represented there.
Often the output of the device is serial UART-compatible channel. The data output may be a continuous stream or a series of data packets for more reliability. While modems are still very common in serial communications the data rate is often compatible to those and may lay in the range of 9600 to 115000 bps. Considering ISDN the bottom of the range may reach 128 Kbps.
