One of the strange things is that the list of who you might want to read to get some idea of anthropology in general would probably differ with the nationality (cultural influences) of the recommender and the moment in history of the recommending.
It is certainly notable that if you read Marvin Harris' The Rise of Anthropological Theory , the impression you would get of who was important (in the same time periods) would be significantly different from earlier accounts such as Robert Lowie's History of Ethnological Theory or Alfred. C. Haddon's History of Anthropology

As a result, to emphasize the obvious, simply take this as a set of personal biases
