Cyberanthropology One of the main aims of my work is to show how the technologies of the supposed future are influenced by the supposed past.

Thus Cyberspace is influenced by:

  • the structures of the gift,
  • by theories of the soul and ghosts,
  • and by alchemy and magic.

I have also compared cybersocieties to 'therapeutic groups', simply because these were the only kinds of groups where association was voluntary and unlikely to extend outside the group, which seem to have been studied in any degree. If anyone has suggestions for further comparisions please let me know.

The idea is to try and investigate the effect of the patterns of the imagination and the 'poetic' upon the use and construction of technology

Other parts of my work focus on social control as a method of interpretation, and the effects that the wider, or embedding society, has upon cybersocieties.

An older but slightly more detailed introduction to the original, but abandoned thesis, is still available.

The Mailing List I wrote about is called Cybermind. The final version of the thesis can be found here

you can also read, if for some extraordinary reason you want to, some of my emails to Cybermind
