Hi Folks, Great site! Does anyone out there have a Quad 303 for parts?
I have to replace the 2 amplifier boards, which I fried during re-biasing.
Alternately, a COMPREHENSIVE modern transistor-equivalent list for the
303 with any re-biasing values? Cheers, Dougie (in Canada)

I would like to buy a CD player that fits on an ordinary bookshelf

seems to be quite rare, is there any such machine?

To tell the difference between a Mk I and Mk II Quad 606 ( there is
a big differnce in internals) the top of the MK II has bevelled edges instead
of straight edges. The internals are much bigger ( 3 times the size ) Caps
15,000 in lieu of 6,800 Caps and a large toridial transformer in lieu of
a C core, plus the MKII has a wider bandwidth and more grunt.

I'm 'modernizing' my equipment. Just bought a pair of 3 years old ESL63
(on stands). Next step: find and modify a 66 pre for my still superb 22's
(ok, purist amongst us won't like it - but it works and it sounds good
- I've heard it). Anyone interested in my AAM tuner and/or FM (acoustical
- for collectors)? Wouldn't like to put it on ebay amongst computers, dishwashers
etc. The AM is up and running well - the Acoustical FM is being serviced
for the time being).

Firstly Quad response to e mails with queries etc is 1st class. I have
e mailed them many times over the past few months and always get a response
within a day or two. First class honours go to Rob Flain service Manager
@ Quad. Secondly, does anyone have a Quad FM4 or 606 in mint condition
that they want to sell. I would prefer Australia only due to postage and
duty costs and our terrible exhange rate. If so e mail with details and
price etc. Here's hoping!!!!!!!!!

using 77 int for bi-amping; does anyone know the internal cicuitry
etc of a 77 int, and how it relates to the pre-amp in and out plugs? I
have 2 x 77 int's, and wondered about using them to bi-amp; i saw an article
about using a 77 int and a 77 power o bi-amp, wanted to do the same thing.
is a 77 int basically a 77 power with a pre-amp stage included? if i ran
the pre-out from the "main" amp to the pre-in of the "slave"
amp would that give me effective bi-amping? what order to connect things
in any thoughts? (if it doesn't work , anyone want to buy a 77 int?) thanks

Does anybody out there have access to, or a copy of the ORIGINAL design
and construction details for the QUAD II output transformers? I'd be willing
to pay for them. It occured to me that there are only a finite amount of
original Quad II's available thes days & they're now fetching ridiculous
prices. Obviously the originals left are not going to last forever. What
happens then??? I would really like to keep these classic designs alive
and kicking for each generation to enjoy, rather than as a distant mem
ry of a once golden age of Hi-Fi. Fortunately, all components necessary
to rebuild Quad II's are available, and there are now several companies
offering superb quality reproductions of the KT66 valves (in particular
the Harma Diamond range, along with Groove Tubes and Golden Dragon). New
hassis can even be manufactured by companies such as Radshape (www.radshape.co.uk),
allowing for slight modifications for modern type connectors. The only
fly in the ointment that stops the user from constructing his/her own Quad
II from the original design is the non-availability of a genuine reproduction
output transformer (Sowter no longer produce their design due to instability
problems, and Wo side's unit is an 'approximation' of the original - not
an exact copy). I pestered Quad about these for over a year and was always
told they'd be available soon. I then found out that the company who wound
these reproductions has gone out of business!!! I these transformers are
never to be released again, the Quad II will eventually become a relic
of the past. If you feel as strongly about this as I do, and would like
to keep the Quad II from becoming obsolete in years to come, please join
me in urging Quad to begin re-manufacturing replacement output transformers
(and mains and choke for that matter) for these classic designs again.
Look forward to hearing any views you may have on this. Cheerio!!!
Comments:
Does anyone have a single Quad II for sale in England? Doesn't have

Hi folks Any one interested in a piece of Quad kit I picked up some
months ago? It is a cabinet for the 3 series ensemble - 33/303/fm3 and
deck (in this case a Thorens). It does not have a makers mark on it but
judging by the quality and materials it may be Quad b ilt. It would be
great for anyone keen on retro type decor. It is in fairly good condition
and I woulld like to pass it on to someone who will use it with the right
amps - I simple use it as a table... any reasonable offer will be accepted
(amps/deck not nculded!) Also, does anyone have any comments re my 2 34
control units? One has DIN connects and an Aux input, the other has Phono
and a CD input. I have used both with my Philips CD and cant tell any difference
- which one might you be tempted to part wiith?
Comments:
re DIN Phono - thought so... I have an unusual (Quad built?) cabinet
for the 3 series ensemble plus deck, ideal for retro design fans - any
one interested email me for full details
Comments:
Simon, the reason for the change from DIN to Phono was for no other
reason than consumer/marketing demand. Same thing applied to Video standards.
Beta is superior to VHS but VHS won the battle.
Comments:
For years Quad insisted on using Din type connection, saying they had
"superior mechanical and electrical properties" Half through
the 4 series, they changed their tune - anyone know why?
Comments:
I'm considering Bi-Amping to my E.S.S AMT3's, using the 405 to drive
bass and low mid and the 303's beaut clarity to look after the HEIL drivers.
Any thoughts regarding crossover at 33 output stage? Cheers, Mort
Comments:

Comments:
If i buy the Ah-tjoeb player, it has a volume contr. on the remote.
Does that mean i could connect it straight to the 303 and only use the
33 for the FM3?? It could be a good idea as most people seem to think that
the 33 is the weak point in the setup??? mmmmmm! what do i know ?? All

cd 692 with my system but it's starting to skip quite badly so i'm in need
of a replacement. Has anyone got any sugestions on a cdp that goes well
together with the Quad? (i'd like a bit ore omphh in the bass but not loosing
the wonderful clarity ) I'm not concerned about having the latest in cdp,
but rather pay descent money for something older but GOOD. What about the
old quad cdp's?? And finally: should i biamp using a second 303?? I k ow
it would LOOK damn good, but would it be worth it soundwise?? THANKS TO
ALL

What a fantasic site! Certainly the most comprehensive, the most enjoyable
& the best looking Quad site around - can't wait for the updates on
the new Quad II forty! But... whatever happened to the next installment
of the Quad II restoration saga??! Keen o see what happens next as I am
currently restoring a pair myself using Kiwame carbon film resistors, Audio
Note paper in oil capacitors, Elna Cerafine for the 16 + 16 uF capacitor
and DNM solid core speaker cable for internal wiring - will send in photo'
when units are finished. If you are contemplating restoring a pair of Quad
II amps, PLEASE do not attempt to drill the chassis to fit modern power
supply leads and phono sockets. Quad can supply the necessary adapter leads
so you can use modern pre-amps and independent power supp ies for the Quad's
using the original connectors; please e-mail me if you require further
information on this. I'd be interested to hear from anyone out there who
is/has restored these classic amps, and any hints, tips or pictures would
be greatly appreciated! Cheerio!

Comments:
I have the above items for sale. The FM3 and amp have just been serviced
by Quad, they looked at the control unit and passed it as OK. Offers?
Comments:
I have had my 44 pre-amplifier for about 10 years now. But ever since
new the input keeps either reselecting the tuner input or not selecting
anything at all. Sometimes you cannot select any input at all even if the
unit is switched off then on again! Qua have repaired it 3 times it still
does it, can anyone help with either an alternative circuit or update?
I do not recognise the logic chips used in the selector circuit and cannot
find them listed anywhere.
Comments:
Great site. Everyone who is fond of Quad must support it and, if they
can contribute with information. I'll send some documents I have about
the 33 and 303 soon.

Is there anyone who remembers Mr.F.B.Griffin of Griffin Radio Ltd.,
in Bristol Street, Birmingham? I was involved, as an employee of the company,
in introducing concept of hi-fi and stereo to the public during the birth
of twin channel sound on disc and t pe when it was first developed. My
company organised demonstrations in Birmingham Town Hall and West Bromwich
using Quad system and demonstrating live versus recorded sounds. We also
formed and ran music club in the basement where we used the finest equipment
to introduce our patron to lassical music. And those who knew, came to
hear their favourite music played on the system which gave 'closest approach
to the original sound'. Nostalgia prevails and Quad has moved on since
those days of the Kinkless Tetrode, KT66 and the Pentode, EL34. I would
love to hear from my lost but unforgotten colleagues who were patrons and
customers of Griffin Radio in 1960's and 70's.

Hi again! i am wondering if i should continue using the old DIN-connectors
that came with the gear when i bought it ? seems a bit strange to use a
nordost interc. and plug it into a 20yr old lead?? Can anyone give me an
idea of how much a pair of old but orking(ish) 57's are likely to cost?
I want them even though i've never seen them irl(not to mention listend
to them)My old, phillips cd692, is breaking up. Any ideas what would suit
my lovely quads???(i'm not rich)THANKS Magnus from Bristol UK
Comments:
The Quad 405 circuitry was changed (to mark 2 status)to allow the amp
to better handle very low impedence loads. In the mid 70's Quad arranged
some blind tests of the Quad II v Quad 303 v Quad 405 - the results of
which indicated that guesswork was as goo as anything in determining which
amp was running. In other words, they all sounded the same.
Comments:
Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a 405 and a 405-2.
Also is it true that the 405-2 produces the sound that most resembles a
tube (valve) amplifier (ie the QUAD II)?

Great site. Today I bought a 'NOS' Quad 77 integrated. A local Dutch
dealer sold about 10 boxes of em for HFL 999,- each! (approx. 250 Pound.
As of today they still had some left. The shop is called RAF and is based
in Amsterdam). Only thing missing is the remote control, but I wonder if
I could mimmick the commands using the infrared features of my PalmPilot,
which can be programmed. Any suggestion welcome!

Friend just acquired an original AM tuner (ie not AMII), with QCII
control unit and single Quad II amplifier. Control unit lights up "Acoustical"
(ie not "Quad". Any thoughts on age of these items? Quad II is
serial no in the 5000 range. rg

I have a couple of interesting pieces - a 2 chassis power amp that
appears to be a forerunner of the Quad II. On the amp unit there is a gold
colored nameplate which reads "A GENUINE DTN WILLIAMSON AMPLIFIER
made in england for bitish radio electronics lt . no. 1 thomas circle washington,
5, dc". It has a pair of KT66, 2- 6SN7GT, a pair of large rectangular
metal can caps and a huge output transformer. The power supply unit is
on the same size chassis with a power transformer same in size as the output
xformer, a large and a small choke, 3 large rectangular metal can caps,
and a 5V4G rectifier. Each cassis is eqivalent in size to a QUAD II and
is painted in the same grey finish. SER # on p.s. unit is 190. The matching
preamp is a "QUAD CONTROL UNIT" type QCII. There is also a tuner
"QUAD" with MW/SW1/ SW2. I would appreciate corresponding with
anyone who might have info on this amp and p ssibly picking up a second
piece.

Hey, all Quad fans, I need some help for finding a suitable pickup
for my Quad equipment. I know DECCA made the best cartridges in the world,
but here in North America they are soooo expensive!!! I checked http://www.warrengregoire.com/hifi-stereo-phono
artridges.htm, and found even the suckiest DECCA, at least better than
those low output ortofon or clearaudio carts, costs $550. Oh man, how can
I afford this luxury? I also attempted to bid for a vintage DECCA Deram
cart in ebay, and found it is a 50mv type which does not fit my Quad 22
with type A adaptor. If any British Quad fans know where I could find some
cheap and brand new carts in Britain, tell me. Also, tell me if you know
a superior replacement for the DECCA carts. Many thanks to all.

the smoothing caps in the power amps these can be obtained from either

are cheaper.Changing the caps in the 303 with new cap reaps a huge sonic
difference

Most of you will realise the horrific "thump" of the 50E
when it's powered on. I find that a polyester capacitor of 0.1uf 400V soldered
parallel after the output from the transformer (which outputs at 38V) and
before the diamond rectifier configuration wi l help minimise noise and
reduce the "kick" to a very tolerant level. The 400V level was
chosen after taken into consideration the split second spike when powered
on in which might reach to about 300V. Comments anyone...?

Dear Sir, I’ve apologize for my English and I’ve give you a great regret
for helping me to make copy of amplifier device “QUAD 405-2”. I had a great
help from information, which Mr. Ludwig had given me to improve device.
Model “QUAD 405-2” has some elements, which parameters are not familiar
to me, such: What is voltage parameter for zener diodes D8 and D9 and what
does firm produce them? (How do they mark them?) Does inductance L4 have
parameter of 22?H or 2.2 549;H? Does it wind up in the air or on the
ferrite? What are dimensions of ferrite body (diameter and length)? What
are dimensions of the wire for wind up (diameter and length)? Does you
have better circuit diagram of “QUAD 405-2”? If you haven’t this information,
please tell me where can I find it? Does you have new e-mail of Mr. Ludwig?
I will be very grateful for all your help. Sincerely yours, Mr. Crnogorac

Great site! I have been a Quad nut for over 30 years when as a student
Electrical Engineer I bought a pair of used ESL57's and made the 33/405
copies mid seventies. The ESL63's came in 1982, the 77 units in 1998 and
everything still sounds fantastic. My n xt project is to compare my superb
(sealed box, active crossover) subwoofers with one of dipole design. Unfortunately,
Australia is not big on Quad or Gradient so getting my hands on a dipole
subwoofer pair won't be easy.

Had this set up about 15 years!! Has anyone any background info on
the 50e. Are they audio or lab amps. Does anyone know of any way they were
used professionally. Great site alot better than the official. What is
Quads opinion of this site?

Bought our first speakers in 1977, with borrowed money, then needed
more loan to get worthy amps! Still hang them from the ceiling to reclaim

please E-mail me. I have not yet got them all listed but have just seen

A site like yours is long overdue - personally I hope that you will
in time consider including all of Quad's products, as they are always innovative,
eg current dumping amplifers (405) and interactive remote controls (77
series). Try to get as much techni al information that you can, circuit
diagrams and infomation, what to look for when buying, etc. This would
be very useful. When you buy Quad gear you definitely feel part of a family
- more so than with just about any other. WWell done. Kind Regards Keith

Thanks for the insight into 'QUAD world'. I'm relatively new to the
world of vintage hi-fi, and it was great to be able to familiarise myself
a bit more with QUAD kit. I'm kinda hoping to get my hands on a QUAD 22

Preston in Lancashire and am currently studying in Edinburgh, so if anyone
around about can help, drop me a line. I'd also appreciate circuit diagrams
for the II/22's. Cheers. John

Hi! I'm currentliy refurbishing my Quad II amps. I'm looking for some
new capacitors (the old oil/paper-caps were replaced with plastic ones
before I got my amps...). I asked at Quad for spares, but they couldn't

english style" caps would make a good replacement? If you've got some
cheap NOS KT66 tubes by GEC then don't hesitate to contact me, too!!! Adrian:

A guy traded me a set of 405 and 44 yesterday. I just put them into
my stereo system in my living room with my B&W P5 speakers. Great sound
for '70's jazz music! I found there are some magic knobs on the 44 pre...
can anybody scan the owner's manual of 44 pre for me? (or for everybody
in Quad World?) Thanks!
Comments:
I picked up a cheap Quad33 pre, sorry control unit. It's nice, but
at low outputs the volumes control is a bit 'digital' on the left channel,
ie. quiet, then suddenly quite loud. I've cleaned it out with switch cleaner,
but still no joy. Any cheap way to change the volume control, bearing in
mind the attached power-on switch, and the relative cheapness of 33s.
Comments:
I'm trying different Quad-combinations, and suprprisingly I seem to
prefer the 34 as preamp with the 606-2. The 34 is not very transparent,
but in terms of musicality and enjoyability it beats the 66 Pre. And the
tone controls are extremely useful. Thanks again for a nice site! I'm looking
forward to information about the newer Quads.

I bought my first 57's in 1962. Right now I am experimenting with stacking
a pair of 57's above a pair of 63's! I hope to capture the best qualities
of both! One of my pairs of 57's have burnt treble panels (arcing). I want
to follow Sheldon Stoke's i structions to rebuild them. Please send me
an e-mail with your stories .

My 405 Amp has given me nearly 20 years of good service, but recently
one the power transistor blew, so I replaced all the tranistors but now
about 10 minutes turning it on there is a loud pip from one channel then
it goes dead. I have the swapped the boa ds over but it still happens on
the output from the same board (so the problem must be that board). Does
anyone have any ideas what could be causing this. (What other components
should I replace?)
Comments:
Does anyone out there know of any esl 57 diaphram coatings other than
graphite? I ve got 13 panels to rebuild and a easier method of coating
them would be gratefully received. Just a note to say that if you love
the sound of the esl 57s, try them stacked, they lose nothing of the original,
wonderful sound quality, and gain loads in maximum volume, bass extention
and lack of dispersion. They then sound better than the esl 63s in all
respects apart from imaging. great site, i`ll be visiting again.

I was inspired by the site and decided to take my Quads out from mothballs...
I still have the original polystyrene cases and shipping boxes with all

Oops! That should have been 'There ARE a couple', not 'There IS a couple

Love this site! To 303 owners: Does anyone know what transistors I
can use to replace U17219, U17229, and 16012 with? These old fossils don't
seem to be in any cross reference book here in Canada. All the others seem
to be listed. I have received the tip of exchanging th old power transistors

burn it up. I'll certainly try it out. Anyone else tried this?

I have made some mods to my 405-2 (power supply and t-network capacitors
from DNM, cabled with kimber cable) Magic sound!!! However the two power
output transistors 17556 keep over heating and blowing on one side only.
The amp pops on power-on, (in-curre t too high) I can't track the fault....
any ideas??
Comments:
Filter and bass-lift knobs on my 44-preamp are scratchy and sometimes
even mutes one channel. There is also a silent hum on the left channel.
Is this caused by oxide on the controls? If so: how should I clean them?
Is the hum caused by inadequate earth due to oxidation somewhere? Thanks,

I have a pair of Quad II's which sound great through my Lowther Speakers.
However one of these develops a slight ticking sound after being on for
a few hours although not that loud it is in very irritating (Chinese water
torture type stylee), and I was wo dering if anyone else has found this
problem? I've changed the Valves over, and had most of the internal resistors
and small capacitors changed. Great site again! Incidentally I compared
a Quad 34 and a QCII pre's through the Quad II's and although there asn't
much in it, the QCII did have the slight edge in sound quality, if not
noise. Progress Huh?

make music! A lot of people here talk about QUAD 303 power amp... when
I first acquired my 303, I was surprised that it could drive my ESL-63
with satisfaction results! I got mine, with 33, for $285 Canadian dollars
(~180 US) so it is cheap. I have a couple of Decca/ ondon recordings on
CD which said that the recording engineers used 303 as the monitor amp.
so I have a piece of recording engineering history to boot. Mine is modified
with a pair of RCA phono female plugs such that I don't have to use the
DIN cable when I couple it with, say, QUAD 34. Talking about 303, a few
visitors of this site said that they have the monoblock 303s... it that
true? Did QUAD really make 303s in monoblock configuration?

I have been trying to modify my pair of QUAD II. I believe that the
original circuit is designed for driving the low efficient speaker, namely
ESL, and not perfect match for high efficient speaker such as Tannoy monitor.
I recently found a good circuit schemantic from LEAK home page about the
phase splitter. I just remove EF86 and replaced with a 12AUX7, dual triode
with LEAK circuit. I get so much more music from my system. I use russian
tubes and Tannoy monitor. Only ne thins is I get very tiny gain, probably
4W output. It get enough volume without a input volume control. I will
let you know more if you are interested in my modification.
Comments:
To JWHM question: By running the Quad II on the wrong voltage setting
means that the high tention (and low tention for that matter) voltages
are greater, 360ish i.e. instead of 330 Volts, this extra drive inside
the valve gives a little more 'oomph' but w ll shorten valve life, and
probably wont do the long life running of the amp any favours. But hey
it's yours, and enjoyment you get from it is that's important. It may not
be needed if you change you speakers to something more sensitive. By the
way check f the output transformer set to the correct speaker impedance?
By the way does anyone know if Quad produced a Long Wave tuner in the 33
series? A LW3? Does anyone have one? Maybe they would want to sell one?

Great site, very usefull and unique information. I'm currently looking
for a second 405 Mk I and information for bi-amping with 2 * 405 Mk I Amps.
Also a pair of Quad II would be nice ... My current Quad set-up is complete
with the Rega Planet CD-player, a TEAC tape-deck, monster cable interconnects
and Misson 751 bi-wired with misson bi-wireing cable. Great sound, hope
it will be even better if I can bi-amp 2 405 Mk I amps. Keep up this good
side.

Hello, dear Quad fans, A site like this is really a surprise !!! I
am using my Quad II + Audio Research LS7 as pre-amplifier, the Quad 22
sounds sweet but not airy, may have something wrong with it. Dear fans,
would you please advise me the following -- 1. What small monitor (wall-mount
type, could be posited close to a rear wall) with high sensativity is best
suit to the Quad II??? 2. I find that the "voltage adjuster"
was best set on 210- 229 to produce good music with texture and strength.
However, the place I am living has a voltage of about 250 (Australia).
How come??? If I set it to 230-250, the music becomes slow and unpleasan
. Do you know why??? (speaker using 88db, recommand 15-60W) Thanks. ps.
setting to 210-229 is a real "up-grade"?

I have a resonable pile of spares for most of the valve stuff and can
supply reprints of the Quad 22/11 owners instruction manuals. I also make
the adaptor pods for the back of the Quad 11 and 22 Control Units, including
one for CD which plugs into the ta e adaptor socket. I can also advise
on how to replace the original rectangular capacitor in the Quad II amp
with new caps which fit inside the original package (without destroying
the cosmetics of the original!!).
Comments:
I am interested in how people have got over the phono input 'problems'
of the old cans on the control unit Also recommended speakers, I currently
use Heybrook HB111's which are pretty good for the money but I'm interested
in upgrading. Is the QAD67 a good CD match for old QAD valve stuff ? Finally,
any recommendations on different pre-amps for the valve power amps. I'm
interested on upgrading. Anybody into old QAD gear (or old radio stuff
in general) gear MUST visit Watts Radio in Somerton, Somerset, England
and speak to Jim - a really fascinating engineer and character.

I am an audio enthusiast (Engineer) with substantial r&d experiance
- and much enjoy the easy warm sound of thee full Quad system, have rebuilt
ALL of the units to an exacting standard using essentially the same valves
as is, I was fortunate to purchase a uantity from the MO valve comany prior
to them stopping production in the late 70.s early 80's. The system is
good fun and perform VERY well for the vintage, but well engineered equipment
using high grade currently available devices can, I am afraid out p rform,
the best restored units - yes my units use the same level of component
quality, however they are capable of quite outstanding performance, especially
when the 57's are stacked to improve the bass presence - yes I could live
with them. - PLEASE PLEA E maintain the current works - I had no end of
problems sourcing an AM manual. R BB

I've had my Quad from new in 1974 so it's pretty long in the tooth,
and has seen me through several upgrades of other components. Assuming
that at some point it gives up the ghost, what would I need to buy (Quad
or otherwise) for comparable quality, and h w much should I budget. Really,
just how well does 25 year old hi-fi stand up to more recent designs in
terms of sound quality, value for money, etc? Anyone out there in cyberspace
got any ideas? I listen to a wide range of music - classical, rock, fol
(but mostly Grateful Dead!!)

Enjoyed looking at the pages. I've enjoyed refurbishing my own Quad
stuff - including getting a Quad FM tuner back into tip-top condition,
aligning it precisely according to the Quad instructions. If you were to
make available the alignment instructions for the AM2 tuner, then I woul
line that up by the book, rather than just how I guess it should be aligned.
I remember first seeing Quad stuff in the 1950's when I was a kid, so having
the complete set-up now provides an example of, as Sigmund Freud said,
the only true source of happiness - the fulfilment of a childhood wish.
Cheers, martin

I have recently purchased a Quad 33 and 2 x 303 units. I am runnng
the 303's seperately for left and right channels. I have taken a look at
the cct diagrams and feel it would be quite simple to change the disk adapter
board to accept CD input. I do not require any form of cartridge pickup
input and am willing to sacrifice any options I thought might have been
included for one of the edges on the disk adapter board. Can you give me
the info required to achieve this or put me in touch with someone who has
done this.

In answer to the people after interconnects. I had a two Phono to Quad
4 pin (303 power) Chord Crysallis. These can be made up by the Chord company
for a little more than the standard versions. (I have no connection, financial
or otherwise).Although I had nothing else for a straight comparison it
seemed fine. I believe this type is known for it’s bright sound which combined
with the “Laid back” sound of the 303 (and most other Quad transistor amps
come to that) it worked quite well. Again great site, Keep up the good
work! Hans Overgaag, read the 22/II article in the Info section, watch
out for your power transformers! Some words from my sponsor! My 306 is

I have never liked the 57's on the floor so I have experimented by
taking off the legs and putting them on Target HJ15/3 stands. For those
of you who do not know this stand it is 15inches high and has a massive
top plate being about 11inches by 11inches. The speakers sit very nicely
at the "correct" height.I wonder if anyone else has also tried
this.? By the way I use Chord Rumour speaker cable and I wonder what you
all recommend. tim

together a classic system with the help of one Sandy Baccaro here, otherwise
in the US known as "Dr. Quad." I'm off now to pick up a cherry-quality
22 preamp for $90 US. It think it's a fair deal, considering it's from
the original owner and carries all documentation. I'm excited! Also awaiting
my ESLs 57s from the boys in Virginia that contain the (drum roll) much-anticipated
German treble units. I have my fingers crossed. They'll be hooked up to
my Quad IIs (replacing a Bedini 25/25 I used to use on a pair of stacked
ESL 57s) and I'm set. Still searching for FM and AM tuners, and a mono

Someone posed a question a while back about interconnects. Does anyone
have any idea as to the likely sound improvement to be achieved by replacing

for listening to Grateful Dead and associated music. If you've never heard

Compliments for your site. I changed the KT 66's, to save them, for

inferior. Keep up the good work to maintain this site at this level.

using before them, the MARK 1 speakers from QUAD too (more than 10 years
!). I asked the factory why there is a 220 microF//1.5 ohm cell on the
hot wire of the FRED and what would happen to the speaker (or the amp)
if that cell is removed. I never get any answer... Can anyone help me -
please feel free to email me...

Quad gear you own: Stacked ESLs & a 303
Comments:
The Quad ESLs have been a standard for many years and continue to hold
their own. Amazing! The 303 is a great small amp for monitoring purposes
and of course sounds great with the ESLs. It is built like a tank for 2x35!
