circuits & dataQuad FM3 cap mods...

This mod was very kindly sent by Peter Maddex...

Please remember, audio equipment can contain high voltages, so only undertake modifications if you know what you're doing. Peter found that the following modifications gave improved performance from his FM3...

The capacitors that can be upgraded are C113 C114 and C121 in the PSU and C100 and C104 in the signal path. They are clearly marked on the circuit board and have their polarity indicated with + and - symbols - you do need to fit the replacements the correct way round. Unplug the tuner completely then remove the two rear screws and slide the cover off. Undo the nuts and bolts from the transformer, and stand the whole thing on end so the transformer is supported. Remove C113 and C114 first and fit the replacements, then C121 and finally C100 and C104...

fm3 capacitor mods diagram

The capacitors are all less than 1 UK pound each - so this mod is extremely cheap. C100 and C104 are signal caps and therefore don't have much voltage across them so it's OK to replace them with a lower voltage capacitor. Full specs are shown in the table below...

capacitor number old value new value
C113 1000uF 25v 3300uF 25v
C114 1000uF 25v 3300uF 25v
C121 220uF 16v 2200uF 16v
C100 0.68uF 35v 4.7uF 25v
C104 0.68uF 35v 4.7uF 25v
