Quad II work in progressapril '98
Quad II's - April The exterior of the Quads have now been thoroughly cleaned so that the new finish will fix properly. Some of the re-wiring has been carried out, and all the metal work has been completed to accommodate the new connectors that will be fitted. One of the end panels has been adapted for the new AC power socket & on/off switch and neon indicator by enlarging/adapting the existing cut outs...The old voltage selection cutout was enlarged to include one of it's mounting screw holes. This will accommodate the AC socket & on/off switch. The other screw hole was enlarged for the neon indicator. The fuse holder mounting remains unchanged. (see below)
Due to the number of holes left in the other end panel, I decided to make new plates to cover these, with cut-outs specifically for the new parts - speaker posts and RCA/phono input socket. This plate has already been coated with the new finish and screwed to the body of the Quads. (see opposite) end panel modifications
re-wiring

speaker/transformer wiring

the internal re-wiring completed so far...
  • the redundant LT and HT wiring to the Jones socket has been removed.(you can see this in the top photo opposite...)
  • hi spec screened cable has been soldered for the input signal connection (pictured - opposite, top)
  • the units have been converted to 8 ohm operation by changing the tag links on the output transformer, and a run of hi spec speaker cable has been soldered in place.(pictured - opposite, bottom)
  • the wires that ran the length of the Quad carrying mains from the AC socket to the power transformer have been removed, as the AC power input will now be at the same end of the Quad as the transformer.
  • the units have been hard wired for 240v operation (UK) now that the voltage selector has been removed.

...all that remains now is soldering the new cables to the new connectors once they're fitted (Not quite that simple! - see next section)...

The new connectors are of the highest (affordable!) quality... double pole mains switches, gold plated speaker posts and gold plated RCA phonos for the inputs. Also pictured are the new neon indicators - I know some people avoid neons, but through testing, I found they induced no noise, and I needed them to fill an old screw hole in the metal work!
