literaturePeter Walker and Quad...
Peter Walker and family This is a photo of Peter Walker and family outside Buckingham Palace, London, after receiving his OBE (Order of the British Empire)...

(many thanks to Göran Karlsson for kindly sending me the photo)..

Both of these photos were taken in the Huntingdon factory circa 1978 and are taken from "The Audio Amateur" issue 3/1978.

The top one shows Peter Walker talking to an employee who's testing the equalisation settings of a 33 pre (just visible behind PW's hand)

The bottom photo shows Peter Walker and Reg Williamson (a Quad engineer) discussing a preamp assembly.

Quad factory - Huntingdon, circa 1978 The exterior of the old Quad - or 'Acoustical Manufacturing Company Ltd' factory in Huntingdon, in the 1970's. The factory was moved here during WWII when their London facility was bombed.

A portrait of the great man himself...

Peter Walker started The Acoustical Manufacturing Company in London in 1936, originally producing PA amps, but soon realised the potential importance of the evolving domestic hifi market. In 1941 he moved production to Huntingdon, Cambs and began making amps like the QA12/P whose successor the QUAD 1 spawned the name Quad from the acronym 'Quality Unit Amplified Domestic'
