911 transcript

Here's a chronology based on a transcript of the 911 calls made from Thurston High School on Thursday morning after Kip Kinkel fired his first shots in the crowded cafeteria. The transcript reveals a quick response by police and medical personnel, as well as the initial confusion that gripped the early stages of the incident. The first Springfield police officer arrived within two minutes of the first call. The first medic unit arrived within five minutes.

7:56 a.m.: First call comes into Central Lane 911 Communications Center in Eugene, saying shots had been fired in cafeteria. Caller tells dispatcher a "Kip Kingle" is possibly the shooter.

7:56 a.m.: Second call tells dispatcher there's a gun in cafeteria.

7:57 a.m.: Second caller tells dispatcher shooter is on the floor and six or seven people have been shot.

7:57 a.m.: Third caller reports one female is shot in leg. Caller is unsure if anyone else is injured.

7:57 a.m.: First caller reports student is in school office with gunshot wound to arm. Caller doesn't know if other wounded students are in cafeteria but tells dispatcher three students are injured - one female with shoulder wound, one female with arm wound and third person with unknown wounds. Caller doesn't know where weapon or shooter is.

7:58 a.m.: First Springfield police officer arrives at south parking lot.

7:59 a.m.: First caller says school staff are trying to get all students into classrooms. Still unclear where shooter is.

7:59 a.m.: Student says Kip Kinkel, white male, freshman, 5 foot, 4 inches tall, with short brown hair and wearing all black clothing, had rifle.

8 a.m.: Dispatcher reports two students critically wounded in cafeteria, tells police to use auditorium door to reach them. Reports five "patients so far."

8 a.m.: Student calling from home in 5800 block of G Street says he saw Kip Kinkel shoot someone with gun.

8:01 a.m.: Arriving medic units are told to stage at main horseshoe turnaround in front of school.

8:01 a.m.: Medics are given permission to enter building. Additional code 3 medic units (lights and sirens activated) requested.

8:01 a.m.: Springfield dispatcher asks additional medics to "expedite."

8:02 a.m.: 911 dispatch puts McKenzie-Willamette Hospital on trauma alert.

8:03 a.m.: Springfield asks additional ambulances to stand by.

8:03 a.m.: Teacher tells dispatcher she heard second-hand 16 students were down.

8:03 a.m.: Springfield reports Kinkel is in custody, again asks for added medics.

8:03 a.m.: Sacred Heart Medical Center is advised of situation.

8:03 a.m.: 911 dispatch reports most students are in cafeteria and two are in serious condition.

8:04 a.m.: Springfield reports at least eight victims, notes Kinkel is in custody and officer on scene can't account for weapons involved.

8:08 a.m.: Lane County sheriff's office says deputies are in Springfield and available to assist.

8:08 a.m.: Red Cross is notified.

8:08 a.m.: Springfield says weapon has been located in main office.

8:09 a.m.: Springfield calls out reserve officers to provide security at school.

8:10 a.m.: Springfield orders entire school closed off.

8:13 a.m.: McKenzie-Willamette asks for number of trauma patients coming its way.

8:14 a.m.: First medic unit leaves for McKenzie-Willamette with one patient.

8:16 a.m.: Red Cross announces it's mobilizing, provides dispatchers with phone number to give to public.

8:16 a.m.: Second medic unit leaves for McKenzie-Willamette with one patient.

8:18 a.m.: Third medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with one patient.

8:19 a.m.: Springfield reports all victims remaining in cafeteria being treated.

8:19 a.m.: Sacred Heart asks for number of incoming patients and their conditions.

8:20 a.m.: Fourth medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with one patient.

8:21 a.m.: 911 dispatch reports two additional students in critical condition in cafeteria.

8:24 a.m.: Incident commander requests more police for traffic and crowd control.

8:25 a.m.: Fifth medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with unknown number of patients.

8:25 a.m.: 911 dispatcher says state police crime lab is on its way.

8:29 a.m.: Sixth medic unit leaves for McKenzie-Willamette with one patient.

8:33 a.m.: Seventh medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with unknown number of patients.

8:33 a.m.: 911 dispatch reports 14 "walking wounded" patients at school.

8:35 a.m.: Red Cross emergency coordinator tells dispatch he's sending people to both hospitals and to school.

8:43 a.m.: Eighth medic unit leaves for McKenzie- Willamette with two patients.

8:46 a.m.: Ninth medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with two patients.

8:49 a.m.: Tenth medic unit leaves for McKenzie- Willamette with two patients.

8:55 a.m.: 911 dispatch tells agencies to direct all inquires, except those of parents, to Springfield city manager's office.

8:57 a.m.: Eleventh and final medic unit leaves for Sacred Heart with two patients.

9:03 a.m.: Springfield says there were 25 victims and one fatality.

9:33 a.m.: Command post is shut

down.

4:40 p.m.: Kipland Phillip Kinkel, date of birth Aug. 30, 1982, is lodged at Skipworth Juvenile Detention Center in Eugene by Springfield police officers.
