Achievements

I served as a Watch Supervisor (Security Clearance TS-BI) at the Command and Control Center for the Commander of the Third Fleet. Included in my service jacket is a letter of commendation from the Commander of the Third Fleet (Vice Admiral). An essential function of this duty was related with the computing and display of motion tracking (radar and underwater acoustics) data. This experience has guided my subsequent work in video production and digital animation which explores motion sensing, distributed multimedia for aiming (eye-hand), sensorimotor-cognitive function, and the animation of interactive navigational mapping.

As a classical flutist (computer music) and acoustical researcher I isolated techniques which naturally transform the flute. This activity has led to appearances at scholarly lectures and publications related with acoustics, computer science, and art technology. I have represented Spain at an international competition sponsored by UNESCO. This project was recorded at the studios of the Spanish National Radio, in Madrid. Other notable accomplishments include playing on the soundtrack for Subway (a short film featuring the New York City poet John Giorno) which was aired on PBS and the French National TV. Since this time (1995) I have been an artist in residency at the Banff Centre (Canada), Carnegie Mellon University (Research Faculty), with lectures at the National Superior Conservatory of France, Computer Science Dept. University of Milan, and collaborations with senior technologists: Charles Ames (Maxwell Award Leonardo Journal), Roger Dannenberg Ph.D. (Senior Research Scientist CMU), R. Weidenaar (President Society of Composers), Richard Boulanger (MIT consultant and Developer C-Sound Program, Radio Baton).

As a direct result of a ten year residency in Spain I completed two manuscripts related with speech and instrumental acoustics (excerpts were published on-line through the Oxford University Press). This work has enabled me to make empirical and theoretical breakthroughs which I am integrating in an audiovisual motion sensing broadcasting system. This activity has led to lectures last year at Simon Fraser University School of Kinesiology, Out of the Box sponsored by the Banff Centre and Telus (Regional Telephone Co.) as well as accepted research papers by the AAAI '99, Irish Society of Cognitive Studies' international conference MIND-IV (1999) and Invencao ’99 Brazil (Glass-Video Installation) sponsored by International Society of Electronic Arts, International Society for Art, Science, and Technology, Leonardo (MIT-Press), the Centre for Advanced Inquiry in the Interactive Arts, at University of Wales College, Newport, and the Centre for Science, Technology and Art Research, in the School of Computing.

A compendium of my research "Survey: Visual Paradigms for New Media" has been published through the LEA (MIT-Press) and has been featured at the Minneapolis Science Museum.
