Red Cushion Hypoxylon-Hypoxylon
fragiforme, Xylariaceae, Sphaeriales.
This eastern North American
fungus thrives in swarms usually on the bark of dead Beech trees.
In season from July through November. These fungi tend to appear
white in colour at first and darken to red and then blacken at maturity.
