Barbastelle, Hairy lipped bats

Barbastella barbestellus:

     This is medium-sized vespertilionid bat with a forearm length of 37-40 mm. It is very distinguished from others in the region by its broad forward-facing ears that are joined across the forehead.

     The lateral sides of the ear loves show fleshy protrusions. There is a long . triangular. pointed tragus.
The colours blackish with silver tips, giving a distinctive mottled appearance on the back.

     The species range is most of the temperate areas of Palearctic region.

     This species is poorly known in the eastern Mediterranean. It was reported only once from the northern shores of the Gulf of Aqaba, N of Eilat (HARRISON & MAKIN 1988). Thus it is most likely found on the eastern shores of the Aqaba Gulf

      Little is known on the biology of the barbastelle. In Iran these were found to roost in trees (under bark or in holes), in tunnels and small caves (LAY 1967).
