Nuctalus noctule:
It is a large vespertilionid bat with the forearm well over 50 mm in length and the greatest length of skull more than 18.3 mm. The over all colour is brownish with a golden tinge which is uniform along the length of the hair , a character that distinguishes noctules from other similar sized bats. Range of the species north-western Africa, Europe, the Near east (South to Palestine) and east to Himalayas, mainland china, Japan and Taiwan. This species is a migrant and single specimens obtained at distant localities such as Mozambique and Oman might be migrant or vagrant and not endemic (Harrison,1980). In Europe one individual recovered 755 km from the place it was marked (Strelkov 1969, Nowak & Paradison 1983 ). They are noisy animals and produce various audible sound especially males in defending a territory (Ognev,1928). One to two young are born ( Nowak & Paradison 1983). It is not recorded yet in Jordan ( Studies in the northern part of Jordan will doubtless show a wider distribution) Qumsiyeh et al ., 1998 |
