In mid March 2002, Instrumenta (www.pjbpubs.com) noted "this year's Pittcon Editors' Awards highlighted the increasing emphasis on laboratory productivity tools" following an extensive review of several new introductions by manufacturers in the analytical instrumentation arena. Four prominent vendors were singled out and rewarded for their cutting edge technologies and innovations. Following an informal poll of editors and journalists who reviewed nearly 20 different product nominations, this is how the chips fell this year:

Pittcon Editors' Gold Award

Horiba/Jobin-Yvon LabRam IR, and

Thermo LabSystems e-Record Manager

Pittcon Editors' Silver Award

Ultrasonic Scientific Ltd HR-US 101 Spectrometer

Pittcon Editors' Bronze Award

JEOL AccuTOF Mass Spectrometer

Other nominations were, in alphabetical order: 4700 Proteomics Analyzer (Applied Biosystems); Accelerator Dual Dosing Station (Chemspeed); Barocycler (Boston Biomedica); Ergonomic Pipette (Vista Lab); GD Profiler (Horiba/JY); Horizon 600 (Oxford Instruments Analytical); IR Cell (Wilks Enterprises); MicroFAST GC (ASI/Central Development); Proteosep (Eprogen); SpectroLaser (Laser Analysis); Spectrum Spotlight (PerkinElmer Instruments); SFC-MS (Mettler Toledo/Micromass); TCH 600 (Leco); Ultraflex MALDI-TOF/TOF (Bruker Daltonics); X Series ICP-MS (Thermo Elemental); XT400 (Innov-X).

Take the advice of the Pittcon Editors who put considerable time and effort into producing this gold, silver and bronze list of vendors that have distinguished themselves far and above the competition. You'll have to forgive us for not noting who wasn't worthy of inclusion on this select list.... they didn't even muster a nomination!

Weigh your options.... you won't choose Shimadzu!
