Note: Read Change.doc for any updates to this file
1. What is ASU (Auto StartUp) ? -------------------------------
Auto StartUp is an automatic application launcher.
2. Who would benefits from ASU ? --------------------------------
You will benefit from ASU if you: - own a Psion 5 - do daily/weekly backups - need to start up utilities (eg. Startup Plus, Remapper, etc) after each backup
You may not want to install ASU if you: - own a Psion 3A, 3C, 3MX, Sienna - backup occasionally - do not need to startup utilities after each backup - use the Psion 5 for specialised applications and do not use any built-in applications
3. What ASU do for you ? ------------------------
ASU is a utility software that will help you re-open all your non-builtin applications (built-in eg. Word, Sheet) AUTOMATICALLY.
There are several application launchers available as freeware on the internet. They can launch your applications but you have to invoke these application launchers manually after a Psiwin backup.
ASU does not replace these application launchers. ASU will monitor your backup and automatically start these application launchers to re-open your other favourite utilities. ASU does not re-open your utilities directly. (When I develop ASU, I did not want to redo all the work that has been done by others.)
Currently, only StartUp V2.00 is supported.
4. What benefits does ASU brings me ? -------------------------------------
- allows you to backup more regularly (and with less hassle) to ensure the the vital information in your Psion 5 is protected - ensures that all your utilities are ready to be used when you need them and not waste previous time waiting for them to start - saves you the trouble in remembering all your useful utiities which you need to re-open after a backup
5. IMPT Note !! ---------------
In order for ASU to function properly, you need to have at least 1 built-in application open before backup. These are:
Word Sheet Data Agenda Sketch Program Comms Record
6. Acknowledgements -------------------
I would like to thank:
- Jean-Luc Damnet for testing and translation of the software to French

8. Pre-requisite Software -------------------------
You need to have a application launcher in your Psion 5. Currently, ASU is design to work with: - StartUp V2.00 by Philipp R. Salvisbery (http://salvis.com)
If you use other application launchers, either switch to StartUp V2.00 or write me a note with the Website URL for me to take a look. If time permits, I will support these launchers but no guarantees.
9. Installation ---------------
After downloading the software, install it as any other SIS file, ie from the folder that contains the SIS file: - click on it to run the installation program and follow the instructions given.
IMPT!!: Without running ASU, do a backup first. This make sure that the ASU program is backed up in your PC. Otherwise, when you later start ASU, you will keep getting a message that tells you that ASU is opened.
Note that ASU currently resides only on C Disk and it assumes that the application launcher also resides on C Disk.
If you have not installed any application launchers, please get a copy from http://salvis.com and install it. It is a freeware.
10. Configuring ASU -------------------
To configure ASU, press the space bar to access the MENU when there is no backing up activity. The MENU does not work when you are backing up your machine.
There are 2 options:
- select the application launcher or none (for debugging purposes) - quit. (Wrong place to have this option.) Another way to quit is to press Shift-Ctrl-Fn-K when you are in the ASU program (warning: if you press Shift-Ctrl-Fn-K in the system screen, you will reset the whole Psion 5. This is a Psion 5 feature not ASU.)
Please exit the MENU before you perform a backup. ASU will not be able to monitor your backups while you are in MENU.
11. Configuring StartUp V2.00 by Philipp R. Salvisberg ------------------------------------------------------
Before you use ASU, you need to configure StartUp V2.00 so that it will launch the applications when it starts up and then exit all by itself without user intervention.
Although the feature is available, I don't see the documentation stating this. Please "play around" a little with StartUp V2.00. You should be able to configure this after a while.
12. What possible can go wrong & steps to resolve it ----------------------------------------------------
1. ASU detects starting of backup but does not detect backup completion
No built-in applications open before backup. Click on the Word icon. ASU will think that the backup has completed.
2. Backup fail to compete (disconnected)
Sometimes, the backup process itself can be accidentally terminated, eg the cable is half-way disconnected. In this situation, it is likely that all your built-in applications have been close. - if you do not want to resume the backup immediately, start any built-in application to signal to ASU that backup has completed. - if you want to resume backup immediately, remember to manually open at least one of the built-in applications after the backup. ASU will then start your application launcher.
3. The application launcher does not run
- Did you configure ASU not to run any utility or run the wrong utility ? Go to ASU, press space bar and check - Did you install the application launcher on C Disk ?
4. StartUp V2.00 specific: StartUp V2.00 runs but does not launch your applications or does not quit after launching
Read "Configuring StartUp V2.00 by Philipp R. Salvisberg"
5. Others:
- did you install ASU on C Disk ? - did you install your application launcher on C Disk ?
13. Ending Note ---------------
Thank you for using ASU. If you have any feedback or suggestions, kindly send me a note chansc888@usa.net.
