I am currently working as a senior researcher at the Regional Science Institute. My educational qualifications include an M.Sc. in Agronomy from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, and a Ph.D. in Crop Science from the University of Cambridge (UK). My doctoral dissertation was based on research on genetic and physiological constraints for pod and seed production in oilseed rape. During my 6-year research since 1989 at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hokkaido National Agricultural Experiment Station, and the Japan international Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), I studied mechanisms of environmental stress tolerance in tropical food legumes (chickpea, pigeonpea, groundnut and soybean). With this background, I am now applying geographic information systems (GIS) in analyzing crop-climate interactions and in sustainable management of natural resources in agro-ecosystems. Throughout my career, I have tried to adopt an interdisciplinary approach, as I firmly believe that most problems in agriculture cannot be addressed by a single discipline.
I have a keen interest in application of modern technologies (including Internet) in solving traditional problems in agriculture. Besides participating in various surveys on sustainable agriculture, I am actively involved in disseminating information on sustainable agriculture through my membership in Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), and Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development (SARD) Networks. I have established good working relationships with many researchers in Australia, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Colombia, China, Cuba, France, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, PDR Yemen, Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Taiwan, UK, and USA, and I solicit their comments and criticism on my research from time to time. I am a member of several professional societies and newsgroups, and have undertaken several consultancies and surveys on freelance basis.
I was born in a farming family in a coastal village of Andhra Pradesh, India and I am still a farmer at heart!! My wife, Ancha Uma Devi, is a graduate in science (major: Zoology), and is interested in improving her skills in business administration. We have a 7-year old daughter, Phanindraja. In my spare time, I enjoy playing with my daughter and watching television.
