Crop Information Systems for Food Legumes in Hokkaido, Japan
object.jpg 1.39 K
Ensure better access to agronomic information for optimal production of high quality soybean and azuki bean in Hokkaido. Because GIS permits integration of large sets of data in a spatial framework and enables more in-depth analyses of agronomic data than the nonspatial methods, the interactions between physical, chemical, and crop data can be identified, derived, evaluated and analyzed more accurately.
The targeted users are officials of agricultural cooperatives, researchers, agricultural experiment stations, and planners of the prefectural and city governments.

method.jpg 1.41 K
GIS-based analysis of cause-effect relationships among crop distribution, yield, quality, soil and climatic conditions. The work on collection and integration of data and information from existing sources has been done in cooperation with researchers at the two collaborating institutions, National Agriculture Research Center and Hokkaido Prefectural Agricultural Experiment Station. Some attribute information (crop yield, variety, previous quality ratings/ etc.) was

Above:
Duration of frost-free period (days)
Right:
Probability for rainfall occurrence at harvest (%)

stored on a PC RDBMS Microsoft Access. ARC/VIEW software was used for mapping and other GIS analyses.

result.jpg 1.67 K
  • Maps on variables affecting yield and quality of food legu-mes in various regions of Hok-kaido (e.g., duration of frost-free period, probability for oc-currence of rainfall at soybean harvest);
  • a series of graphs depicting a) changes in soybean and azuki bean productivity in Hokkaido during the past 2 decades, and b) relationships among various components.
Integration of growth simulation models into a GIS is planned for the future to allow users to develop a spatial decision support system for legume crop management.
