I am a homebuilder of recumbent bicycles. I live in Sierra Vista, Arizona, about 15 miles north of the Mexico border in the High Southwest Desert. I started building bents out of self- defense. I have an extremely bad lower back. I have had three operations in the last ten years, and though I love riding bicycles, I felt I had to make a tradeoff until I found out about recumbent bicycles. I rode my first bent in Augsburg, Germany. It was a homebuilt Tour Easy, and I fell in love, and have stayed in that condition for the last 11 years. I built my first bike because the LBS (Local Bicycle Shop) told me that not only did they not carry recumbents, but they would not order me one, as "Recumbents don't climb hills." Suffice it to say I did not take his advice to heed. Now the High desert town of Sierra Vista, Arizona is populated with some 15-20 bent riders at last count. As this area has some of the most challenging terrain, (the area is listed in the top 10 of the mountain bikers hall of fame,) the recumbent is actually in it's element. Yes Virginia, Bents do climb hills quite nicely thank you. Please enjoy this page and let me know what to do to make it better. Bob Miller Top of Page
