Sumi-e

The beauty of Sumi-e painting lies in its simplicity. Only the fewest of brush strokes are used to express the essence of form in a composition. Early Sumi-e artists mastered the economic use of brush strokes, and , utilizing the tonal quality of sumi [ink] made their paintings simple yet elegant. Years of study and practise are required to capture the spirit and the Zen-like quality of a Sumi-e painting.

The Sumi-e Artists of Canada, a non profit organization, strives to promote this style of paintings by having classes and art shows in Toronto.
