National Institute of Health is a top class  medical research organization, this 109 years old research institutes history is just amazing, right now, there are about 27 top class institutions belong under the umbrella NIH.  It is administered as a part of US department of Health and Human  services. Howard Hughes, a powerful name in American history, science and aviation industry
 (I enjoyed seeing the movie about Howard: Aviator, if you did not see this movie, I recommend you to watch, though movies will have lots of colors, pepper and salts sprayed all over,  this one is not an exception in that perspective, but extremely entertaining and lots of information about Howard and his life has been portrayed by Leanardo de caprio, the guys action is just top class). There is a saying or perhaps truth that even Nixon used to be intimidated about the power of Howard Hughes while Nixon was the president, Howard Hughes was not only a poineer in aviation industry, he had multiple talents. Howard was a great Philanthropist, otherwise, how can a top class health and medical science institution can be established and run even after his death the institute transpires his name and power. Scientist and clinicians, and graduates regard howard hughes as one of the best places to work.

It seems the new branch of HHMI fosters a very novel way of doing science and research, a scientist can run his scientific research tean and a lab without worrying about lots of mundane administrative, non-science related tasks that will be taken care of the Janelia Administration. Nor a scientist has to worry about getting funding and money to run the lab as HHMI will quarentee funding for several years. It sounds like a novel approach but perhaps the first of its kind approach and we have to wait and see how this transpires when compared to conventional academic methods.

I have speacial pride about Yale University, because  I am a faculty at the Yale Medical School, a top class medical hospital and research instituition within the Yale family. Yale University is located in the heart of New Haven city. As a matter of fact, the whole New Haven is decorated by Yale's buildings, libraries, museums, auditoriums and bunch of colleges and more, it is probably true to say, New Haven is owned by Yale!? (don't mention my name that I said it ok!!!). Yale is one of the few  ivy league universities, world famous and presitigious IVY League group of universities, quiet famous for fostering high quality education, research and hospitals (no such thing like a perfectly, great educational place, there are problems in these places too, but better than other places to make it feel better). Insterestingly, all the ivy league universities are physically and functionally located in the eastern US states ( refer the title: the ivy leagues below).

IN UK,  The most well known and reputed private or charitable funding agency for  medical research and basic science is run by Wellcome Trust. Perhaps like Howard for US, Sir Hendry Wellcome, who's will to promote medical and scientific research was the founding resource for wellcome trust. They not only fund research in UK, they also fund scientists in several other countries and along with wellcome trust promotes funding for scientists to go back to their countries to establish research labs (visit the funding column, underwhich international funding for more details). Science and medicine needs more funding from private people, as government funding shrinks year after year. If there are funding issues in countries like US and imagine how bad it will be in other developing and third world countries, if someone wants to develop scientific instituitions the example I write here are like role models, there outstanding researchers work in these places, if not all the scientists, I bet many remarkable scientists and doctors work in these places.

Humboldt is a non-profit foundation based in Germany, the founder of humboldt is
Alexander von Humboldt who was a naturalist and a sholar himself. The grants are named after his name Humboldt Foundation Fellowship, in Germany this  is a quite prestigious fellowship offered to scientists and young scientists, and to postdocs of national and international origin. I believe that Alexander wanted to promote the international culture and collaboration in science, imagine seeking international talents in the years before 1950s is awesome. The globalization is nothing new to this world as it has been happening since those days, but the technology made it more accessible and more feasible to do business and partnership world wide with much ease.
