Synopsis |
The thesis entitled, " Novel Method of
Preparation of Catalyst Carrier for Low Temperature Fuel Cells "
aims to experiment a novel method of preparation of catalyst
carrier in order to increase the electrode performance of Low
Temperature Fuel Cells by giving a better catalytic distribution on
this carrier. Combustion synthesis/Pyrolysis method is adopted for the
preparation of this catalyst carrier by choosing different sources of
natural and synthetic precursors. The pyrolysis temperatures were
optimized for these precursors by considering their physico-chemical
properties as well as the physical observation of the synthesis. This
thesis is organized in two sections, one is the preparation of
catalyst carrier and the second is the characterization of these
catalyst carriers with different optical and electro-chemical
studies.
It has been found that the catalyst carrier
prepared by this method is most suitable for the catalyst loading.
Nano size catalyst particle could be prepared by this in-situ method,
so that the amount of platinum needed for the required cell area can
be reduced. A study has been made on the physico-chemical properties
of the catalyst carrier with the conclusion that the structural and
chemical changes just before the combustion/decomposition reaction
plays an important role in deciding the yield and particle size of the
product carbon. This method of preparation is unique and enables one
to circumvent most of the problems associated with the conventional
method of preparation of catalyst carrier. |
