Karachi Mass Transit Program; An Introduction
After the initial study of Karachi Mass Transit, it was realized that Karachi was in need of a Mass Transit Program desperately. Inorder to fulfill these requirements of a growing population, it was necessary to either implement a project to give it away to some one in the private sector on a Built-Operate-Transfer Basis.
For undertaking a project of this scale and size, the Karachi Mass Transit Authority under the auspices of the Government of Sindh. This Authority was given the task to develop the project, undertake its designing and to analyze its feasibility.
The plan to be implemented by the Karachi Mass Transit Authority is outlined as the 6 corridors of high demand in for 1990.
PRIORITY I - CORRIDOR 1: 15.2 km
Mereweather Tower to Sohrab Goth via M.A. Jinnah Road, Jahangir Road & Shahrah-e-Pakistan.
Estimated Cost: Rs. 3,220 million
This is the only corridor for which the government has invited expression of interest and actually signed an agreement with some company in the private sector. Unlike others, its design and layout has also been decided upon.
PRIORITY II - CORRIDOR 2: 12.0 km
Karachi Cantonment Station to Orangi Town via Dawood Pota Road, Shahrah-e-Iraq, Zaibunnisa Street, Garden Road & Manghopir Road.
Estimated Cost: Rs. 2,580 million
PRIORITY III - CORRIDOR 3: 15.4 km
North Karachi, Nazimabad to Banaras Chowk, Liaquatabad and Mangophir Road Bridge, near SITE office, partly along the Karachi Circular Railway. (cost yet to be determined)
PRIORITY IV - CORRIDOR 4: 20.5 km
Karachi Cantonment Station to Landhi on Reserved Rail Right of Way along the Main Line. (cost yet to be determined)
PRIORITY V - CORRIDOR 5: 14.5 km
Nagan Chowrangi to Korangi via Rashid Minhas Road and over Shah Faisal Colony across the narrow width of the Malir River. (cost yet to be determined)
