History & Development

of Karachi

Historically, Karachi has no great past to boost of. There are no ancient glories and no great associations here, no gigantic movements, no ruins or stories of peace or war. But even with its short history, it has made sufficient progress as the trend of its past achievements show.

It was during the time of the kalhoras that Karachi was made a trade center; since then many have ruled the area like Khars of Kalat, Talpur Mirs, Hindu Chiefs and finally the British.

In 1861-65, the British constructed the Sindh Railway, which gave a boost to the development of the entire area between the old town, Bunder Road and Napier Road. Shifting of Government Administrative Offices took place, commercial offices and shopping centers grew with the expansion in housing need for social services also arose and many markets evolved. The Saddar Bazaar evolved, as a fashionable shopping center with beautiful frontages and wide clean roads. Karachi became a typical colonial trading center by 1947.
