The Present and the Future

The present looks bleak for the Karachi Mass Transit Program; as much as any other projects initiated by the government. The government has failed to give in the promised $ 130 million to the Indus Mass Transit Company which represents a 22% equity share in the project at the present moment.

Nonetheless, there is some kind of hope available for those investors who have already invested in the project. The execution of the project has now been passed on to the Sindh Government which will shortly be setting up a body by the name of "Karachi Metropolitan Transport Authority" to coordinate and oversee the implementation of the project.

Although it was decided that Priority Corridor No. 1 would be operational by the year 2000, nonetheless the project has still not gained its financial close in order to start the physical construction.

In the first phase of construction, the project would be constructed from Mereweather Tower to the Quaid's Mausoleum, the rest of the length up till Sohrab Goth (3.5 Km) will be operational one year after the first phase is completed.

The Sohrab Goth- Mereweather Tower corridor will meet the needs of an estimated 350 million commuters per annum which would go up to 500 million by the year 2031.

For the last three decades, the citizens of Karachi have been suffering at the hands of an unpredictable and highly inefficient transport system. This problem may only be overcome by the implementation of a Mass Transit System for this city of 12 million inhabitants.
