Upper School Safety Contract
By my signature below, I ____________________________________________ agree that I have read and understood all of the safety rules in this contract. I realize I must obey these rules to ensure my own safety, and that of my fellow students and instructors. I will cooperate to the fullest extent possible and follow all instructions given by the instructor. I am aware that failure to follow this contract will result in a grade of zero for the assigned lab. A second failure to follow the safety rules will result in a lab grade of zero for the semester.
General Rules
1. Follow are verbal and written instructions carefully. If you do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ask the instructor before proceeding.
2. Do not handle any lab materials or do any work if the instructor is not present.
3. Do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other laboratory materials until you have read and understand any instructions.
4. Do not eat, drink, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not use lab glassware are containers for food or beverages.
5. Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor. Never do anything that is not called for in your instructions. Unauthorized experiments are prohibited and will result in a grade of zero for the lab.
6. Never fool around in the lab. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited. They will result in a grade of zero for the lab.
7. Bookbags, purses, etc. will not be placed on the lab tables. They should be against the walls or the back cabinet. Only materials used in the lab should be on the lab tables
8. Be alert and cautious at all times in the lab. Notify the instructor of any unsafe conditions.
9. Dispose of all waste materials as directed by the instructor.
10. Keep hands away from face, eye, mouth and body while using chemicals or preserved specimens. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after performing all experiments. Clean all surfaces after the lab. Follow the instructor’s directions for cleaning of equipment used in the lab.
11. If there is a fire drill during a lab period; close all containers, turn gas valves off, and turn electrical equipment off.
12. Preserved biological materials are to be treated with respect and disposed of as directed by your instructor.
13. When using knives and other edged instruments always carry with tips and points down and pointed away from you. Never try to catch falling sharp instruments. When they are not in use keep them in the dissecting kit.
Clothing
14. Any time you are using chemicals, heat, or glassware you will wear goggles.
15. You will wear shoes that fully cover your feet. Sandals, shower shoe, flip-flops, bedroom slippers, or other footware that does not cover your feet is not allowed.
16. Lab aprons are available and must be worn when working with liquids or heating chemicals.
Accident and Injury
17. Report any accident or injury, no matter how trivial to the instructor.
18. If you or your lab partner are hurt yell out “Code One” to get the instructor’s attention. If you hear “Code One” stop what you are doing, move away from the tables, and be silent.
19. If chemicals splash on your skin or into your eyes immediately flush with water. Flush your eyes for 20 minutes with the eyewash station.
Handling Chemicals
20. All chemicals in the laboratory are to be considered dangerous. Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemicals unless directed to by the instructor. Use only as much of the chemical as you need. Do not mix chemicals unless directed to do so.
21. When pouring liquids have the containers pointed away from you.
22. Always add acid to water.
23. Never remove chemicals from the laboratory area.
Glassware and Equipment
24. Never handle broken glass with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass.
25. Never use chipped or cracked glassware.
26. Remove an electric plug from a socket grasp and pull on the plug, not the wire.
27. Report damaged electrical equipment immediately.
28. If you do not understand how to use a piece of equipment, ask the instructor for help.
29. Do not immerse hot glassware in water. It may shatter.
Heating Substances
30. Use extreme caution when using a gas burner. Take care that hair, clothing, and hands are a safe distance from the flame at all times. Do not put any substance into the flame unless specifically instructed to do so. Never reach over an exposed flame. Light gas burners only when directed to do so.
31. Always use a ring and a fire screen to support beakers and flasks when you heat them with a gas burner.
32. Never leave a lit burner unattended. Never leave anything that is being heated or is visibly reacting unattended. Always turn a hot plate or burner off when not in use.
33. Point the end of a container that is being heated away from people. Never look into the end of container that is being heated.
34. Heated metals and glass remain hot for extended periods of time. Always used the appropriate clamps or tongs to hold the glassware.
