Science Project - Third Six Weeks

Research Report

Each student will be responsible for a research report. Two written products are required. An outline, with annotated bibliography, is due on December 12, 2008. A five page written report is due on 8 January 2009. Your oral report given the fourth six weeks will be based on this paper. The APA guide is on the projects page. A science project guidebook is also available on the projects page.

Your written report is to be in APA format:

  1. Title page (first page)
  2. Abstract Page (second page): A one paragraph summary of your project.
  3. Body of Paper: (begins the third page)
    1. Introduction
    2. Summary of your reserach
    3. Conclusion and Hypothesis
  4. Reference list in APA format (last page)

Sections 2 and 4 require headings centered at the top of thepage. Sections 3a, 3b, and 3d require side headings. The page three will have the title of your project centered at the top.

Your report is to be typed, double-spaced using a 12 point font. Arial, Courier, and Times New Roman are acceptable fonts. I have used Times New Roman 12 point for this. You will have 1 inch margins on all four sides. Section 3 (the body of the paper)will be at least 5 pages, of text, long. Illustrations will not count as part of the five pages. Each page, beginning with the title page, will have the short title and the page number in the upper right corner.(Use the header function of your word processor)

Use parenthetical references to show the source of facts, ideas, and information which are not your own. An APA parenthetical reference gives the authors last name and the copyright year {ex. Impurities raise the boiling point of water (Heinrich, 1996)} Include the page number if you use an exact quote. At a minimum you should have one citation for each paragraph of your paper.

While you can quote sentences and small paragraphs, you may not make your paper just by cutting and pasting quotes, even if they are properly cited. You will receive a zero if you do so.

You must have at least 6 references. Encyclopedias, such as Encarta may be used only as a source of illustrations. Wikipedia is considered an encyclopedia. It is also unreliable because anyone can change an article. For these two reasons Wikipeida will not be used as a reference. The are not to be used as references. The reference list will be on a separate page. The heading "References" should be centered at the top of the page. Use APA format for your references. Complete copyright information must be given for any illustrations. This should follow your references or you may give the information on the page with the illustration.

Additional Requirements: You may seek help or assistance from others. If others help you the acknowledgement form must be completed, signed, and included as the last page of your report. The work must still be your own. The checklist will be used as the cover sheet to your report and has blocks to check as you fulfill project requirements. I will also use this form to grade your report.
