Very simply, it is a direction 90 degrees (perpendicular) to another line that it intersects. So, a point in space is zero-dimensional, a straight line is one-dimensional, a square is two dimensional, and a cube is three dimensional. Time is the fourth dimension. The latest Superstring theories say that there may be eleven dimensions rather than ten, so there are seven which we cannot experience compacted into a string. What must reality be like in these other dimensions, and what would happen if we could access and amplify some of these dimensions to cross our regular four-dimensional realm? We know that the inside of an atom is a very strange place and the things that go on there don’t apply to our large-scale universe. Nobody has ever “seen?an atom. We can only try to imagine what it is like. But just as Mr. Square who is drawn on a piece of paper tries to imagine what in the world a cube is, we cannot imagine what reality must be like inside the most mysterious and confounding place of all: inside that unimaginably unreal place we can only imagine to be a “nucleus?of an atom, where superstrings interact the strongest and the most exotically with each other. The exploration of this ultimate mystery is only just beginning.
