Raj Kumar Vedam

Rajkumar Vedam hails from Bangalore. He is a self-taught musician, who started singing on stage from the school days in 1975, and playing the guitar since 1980. During his undergraduate studies in Mysore University, he was a frequent participant in youth festivals all over India, and has won many prizes in music competitions. In this period, he also became a professional  musician, performing at 5-star hotels in Bangalore such as  Hotel Ashok, Taj, and Holiday Inn. He formed his first music group, "The Thornbirds", which gave its debut performance at an all-night dance programme in Conoor (near Ooty). During his graduate studies at the Indian Institute of Science, he formed his second music group, "Phoenix", which performed at Bangalore's most prestigious music hall. This group also appeared frequently on Doordarshan as well as AIR, and at a number of business parties in 5-star locales. He taught reading of western music notation and playing the guitar to over twenty students, on a voluntary basis. He has formed a few more music groups since, "Grottlers", "Indian Association Band", and  "Bollywood On Tap". He enjoys playing music with performers at all levels of sophistication. He plays western rhythm and blues, pop, and Indian film music. He also plays the keyboard and is experimenting with MIDI compositions. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon, with his wife Jayashree, and his  6-month old daughter, Vrinda. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Oregon State University.
