In general
Check everything! Don't rely on what someone said or what applied three years ago. Shatnez locations change every season.
Check the collar for a "Made in ..." label, it's your first
warning sign. Suits made in the US, Canada and Central America are
generally fine if they are less expensive (< $200)
Read all contents labels and don't buy it if it lists both wool and linen! Avoid reprocessed wool.
Most suits containing shatnez come from Italy, USA, Eastern Europe, Indonesia, Korea, Japan and Hong Kong.
More expensive suits (more than $400) are likely to contain shatnez. This is true for American made suits too.
Everything that is worn must not contain shatnez. This goes for men, women and children alike.
Suits and costumes from Thrift Shops frequently are well made and have shatnez! This includes Army uniforms!
All garments listing Linen on the label should be checked. This is true for women's garments too.
General rule for women: Check it if the label lists Wool, Linen, or if the fabric has a linen look.
Note that Hong Kong custom suits are prone to shatnez. However, if you
ask that they not put in linen you have a better chance
that it won't end up with shatnez. All Hong Kong customs suits MUST be
checked!
