These pictures are from 1999, when we went with some friends
of ours on a Carnival Cruise. Our cruise was on the Fantasy
cruise ship. The itenerary included Key West, Cayman Islands,
Cozumel, and New Orleans. This was a 7 day cruise. We had a lot
of fun. I noticed that in Cozumel they had a "Jeep
Jungle Adventure", I had to go! First, I wanted to know if
they were REAL jeeps and if so, I thought it would be a great
experience. We didn't take a whole lot of pics, however, here is
what we did take.
|
Here is a shot of the caravan of jeeps that were
headed out on the "Jungle Adventure". this
was taken after reaching what used to be a limerock
quarry. Just outside of Cozumel.
|
Here are some friends of ours that we went on the
cruise with. Notice their colorful jeep. The theme is
purely Mexican. This was as we were leaving to head
back to the ship.
|
This another shot of the caravan of jeeps as the
road meandered through the quarry and the surrounding
jungle. We were headed to a beach where we got on a
boat and went to an island for a mexican style bar-b-que.
It wasn't very good, plus it rained and made everyone
miserable.
|
Here we actually got to go through some mud and
water. There were a couple of places like this.
Actually I hit the skid plate over the gas tank on
some rocks at one point as we went through a flooded
section of trail that had some fairly large rocks
underneath the water. The Mexican trail guides didn't
want anyone really playing in the water, because they
were afraid we were going to hydo-lock the engines.
Although they didn't know my friend Bill (the guy
driving in picture above) and I were jeep owners and
we were experienced off-roaders.
|
Here we are as we were leaving the pier from the
ship and were headed to the jungle. We meandered
through Cozumel (seen here) where there seems to be
no seatbelt laws or speed laws as the seat belts didn't
work and we went flying down the roads (very little
signage). We were led through the non-tourist section
of Cozumel and out to the jungle. Let me tell you, it
was an experience!
|
Some additional notes. All the jeeps were bone stock YJs, they
did have a few Geo Trackers. My friend owns a 86CJ7 and I own a 97TJ.
We really missed our rigs, it would have been great to have driven our
own here. We could have
played in the water and mud. Most if not all of the tourist on the
ride seemed to have no experience driving jeeps. There were some who
were doing doughnuts and were being very dangerous. If anyone goes to
Cozumel and takes this shore excursion, please keep it in mind, they
seem to have a disregard for safe driving of the jeep as well as safety
equipment functionality. As I mentioned before, our seatbelts didn't
work. Also at the time we went, it was $75(US) per person. Of course
as is typical of any Mexican excursion, tips are expected! If you have
any questions,
