Here is the newest section of the railroad right after it was completed and planted. I used colored gravel to make a "dry river bed" effect, as this portion of the layout represents a "desert landscape". The plants are very small now, but the next photo shows the same area one year later. Quite a change!
Here is the same area as above one year later. Notice the green station to see how the landscaping has changed. The verigated weigela shrub is featured behind the station, along with a dwarf "dillys" pine tree.
The same area showing more landscaping to the west. The verigated weigela shrub is behind the green station. The pink flowering plant in the front of the photo is a pink potentilla. You can see blooming blue Veronica in the background.
Here is a shot of the focal point of this section, the Weeping Cherry tree. It blooms in mid-April and puts on quite a show. You can see the blue Veronica plants just starting to make green mounds to the left of the tree.
Here is the same area showing the "point to point" Aristo Craft reversing unit where I run the LGB LCE Train. Creeping phlox borders this track on the left and on the right, the blue Veronica perennials.
Here is a shot of the very first section of the railroad built in 1991. There is a small pond under the railroad bridge in this section.
Here is the very first section of the layout from 1991 showing my small western town. These are all POLA and PIKO kits with the Aristo-Craft water tower in the foreground. The plantings are a mugho pine, globe spruce and a dwarf burning bush.
