On Sunday, May 20, 2001, we again raced our 1984 Mercedes Benz 300SD Turbodiesel sedan, in the Silver State Classic Club Nevada Open Road Challenge high speed rally over 90 miles of Hwy 318 from Lund, NV to Hiko, NV.
This time we were in the 105mph target average speed "Touring Car" Class
The course was cool and we had a tail wind this time. Our 17 year old car, with 220,000 miles on its odometer, reached nearly 120mph over portions of the course and we were clocked by the mid point radar trap at 115mph. We finished 8th out of thirteen cars with an average speed of 104.7584mph. Pretty good considering we again did not use any timing devices. Our strategy was simply to enjoy the ride and let the navigator of the 1972 Mercedes 280SLC AMG, that started 30 seconds ahead of us, do all the timing work. Unfortunately, the SLC didn't handle their timing all that well and finished 10th.
There were three other Mercedes Benz in the race this time.
We will not race in September. Since 105mph average is about all our Mercedes diesel can handle on the Hwy 318 course, in May 2002 we plan on racing June's '93 Z28 Camaro in the 110mph Class.
