On Sunday, September 17, 2000, we again raced our 1984 Mercedes Benz 300SD Turbodiesel sedan, in the Silver State Classic Club Silver State Classic Challenge high speed rally over 90 miles of Hwy 318 from Lund, NV to Hiko, NV.
This time we were in the 100mph target average speed "Touring Car" Class
We finished 9th out of twelve cars with an average speed of 101.4723mph. Closer to target than in May but not close enough for a trophy.
It was warmer than normal. We had a head wind most of the way. Going flat out with the air conditioner on our coolant temperature kept climbing to nearly 120C and periodically I'd hit the Defrost button to bring down the temperature. A bit nerve wracking but we managed to finish without frying our engine. After returning to Ely, I had to add more than a liter of Elyon spring (tap) water to our cooling system. The coolant temperature stayed around normal (87C) during the trip home and ever since.
There were three other Mercedes Benz in the race this time, two from California, one from Canada, and one from Texas.
Here are several photos of the event which may take a while to download depending on your connection speed:
