Welcome to the Amanda Coetzer Homepage. Amanda Coetzer is definately one of the most wonderful players ever to hit women's tennis. As the smallest (but cutest) member of the top 20, this 25 year old from South Africa makes up for her lack of height by her sheer talent and will on the tennis court. A proud patriot for her home country, as can be seen by her 5 Hopman Cup appearances, Amanda is also a perfect role model for any junior who as aspirations of one day becoming a champion.
The serene and uncontroversial Coetzer began tennis as a little girl in Hoopstad, a tiny farming community 500 miles south of Johannesburg. With a tennis court in the backyard, Amanda was coached by her father Rico, a lawyer who was also ranked in South Africa's top 10. At age 11, Amanda experienced her first international tournament at Disney World in Florida and has never looked back.
You would have to travel a long way to find someone as pleasant and down-to-earth as Amanda Coetzer. Renowned for her spirited nature, one may some up Amanda Coetzer by this quote. "What means the most to me is the everyday joy you get out of tennis. If you don't enjoy the everyday things, you'll never even reach the other things." (Amanda Coetzer, Aus. Tennis Mag. 1993)
Amanda Ends Steffi's Grandslam Reign.
Amanda Coetzer thrashed Steffi Graf at The Australian Open this morning (Jan. 19) 6-2, 7-5. The spunky little springbok began the match with unparalleled confidence as she streaked ahead 4-1 in the first set, then finally took it 6-2. Steffi, obviously shocked by the first set, came back into the 2nd with a vengence and stormed ahead 4-2. The next game took about 20 minutes as the two battled over duece. Steffi finally took that game to lead 5-2, and looked like she would close out the set. But Amanda had other ideas. She broke back and took the next 5 games to win 7-5. The amazing feature of this match was that although Steffi missed a couple of easy smashes, she was playing at her usual high standard and it was Amanda who had to play exceptionally well to win the match. Not a game went by that Amanda didn't make an unbelievable winner. This may undoubtabely be her best year so far.
