Boycott of U.S. Commemoratives
In reaction to the proliferation of meaningless, unattractive commemoratives,
there is a growing movement to boycott U.S. commemorative coins.
Coin Collecting, Inc. will track this interesting development.
The following coin clubs have signed the so-called
Swoger Proclamation, which is included below.
- Blue Ridge Numismatic Association
- Chicago Coin Club
- Fort Walton Beach Coin Club
- Illinois Numismatic Association
- Indiana State Numismatic Association
- Lansing Coin Club
- Livingston County Coin Club
- Maryland State Numismatic Association
- Michigan State Numismatic Society
- Numismatic Association of Southern California
- Royal Oak Coin Club of Michigan
ANA Does Not Join Boycott
On Sep 14-15, the American Numismatic Association Board of Governors voted not
to join the boycott. Instead, they passed a resolution expressing the collector
disenchantment with the current commemorative coin programs.

(written by Bill Swoger)
Whereas, America's coin collectors have paid for the success of America's
commemorative coin program for more than a century, and
Whereas, all the people of the United States, national monuments, several
states, counties, municipalities, events, and organizations have benefited
through this program by the money provided from America's coin collectors, and
Whereas, the Congress of the United States has shown by its inaction
regarding this subject that it deems that
- the 200th Anniversary of the United States Mint and the Commencement of
our National Coinage is of so little importance that it is not worthy of now
being celebrated with its own separate issue within our National
Commemorative Coin program; and
- America's coin collectors are not a worthy enough group, nor their
activity important enough, that they should now be entitled to have coins
struck to commemorate the genesis of their activities in the United States,
nor that they should have access to that program to further their science;
and
- the collections and studies of the National Numismatic Collections,
the Museum of American History, and Smithsonian Institution are not of enough
importance to them them worthy to benefit through America's commemorative
coin program; and
Whereas, the requests and pleadings from America's coin collectors through their
representitive organizations have fallen on the deaf ears of their government,
Now therefore be it resolved that the (name of numismatic organization)
hereby urges all its members to join with our fellow coin collectors throughout
this nation and boycott America's National Commemorative Coin Program, until
such time as the U.S. Mint Bicentennial Coin Act is enacted.
