The tradition of birthstones arises from the knowledge that the ancient Hebrew high priests wore
a breastplate with 12 stones.
Each stone represented a tribe of Israel. An onyx was the second stone on the fourth row.
Rubies are called "The King of Stones" They were said to confer invulnerability to wounds, as are all the red stones. Some Asiatic tribes used them as bullets believing that the red stone inflicted a more deadly wound than a lead bullet. Owners of brilliant rubies were assured that they would live in peace and concord with all men, losing neither his land nor his rank and he would be preserved from all peril. It was also thought the gem protected their house, their fruit trees and their vineyards form storms. The greatest effect was obtained by wearing the stone on the left side in a ring, brooch or bracelet.
