Aquamarine is the blue or blue/green member of the beryl family. It has a hardness on the Mohs scale of 7.5. It has a refractive index of 1.57 - 1.58.

The tradition of birthstones arises from the knowledge that the ancient Hebrew high priests wore a breastplate with 12 stones. Each stone represented a tribe of Israel. Most have agreed throughout the ages that one was a beryl although the color of the stone used and it's exact placement on the breasplate remain a matter of debate and speculation.
Ancient sailors wore it as one of 7 amulets of protection. They believed it banished fear. Arnoldnus Saxo wrote in 1220 that it helped against foes in battle by rendering the wearer unconquerable. It quickened the intellect and cured laziness. Thomas de Cantimpre wrote that it reawakened the love of married people. The Book of Wings written in the 12th century said a beryl engraved with the image of a frog would have the power to reconcile enemies and produce friendship.
