Self - Esteem

What is it? Let’s say it’s how we feel about ourselves. It’s an inner peace with ourselves and God. It’s the thing that lets us walk into a room of strangers with our head high, striding along like a Queen. It makes us smile throughout the day. It energizes us! Let’s face it, it’s important! It can change and make or break us, every day of our lives. Others will look at us the way we look at ourselves. Ooppss!! Does that mean it is something we have control over??? You bet!!! We can build our own self-esteem. We don’t need, nor can we expect someone else to do it for us. (Although, family and friends can and should be a real positive force.)

Ever had a wish? Wish you were smarter?? Wish you were prettier??? Wish you were married???? Not married? HA! I mean happily married???? You have the power to make anything come true with a plan. This is America, where dreams come true! A wish is a wish until you devise a plan to make it happen. Then, it can become a reality. It may take time, money, work, whatever, but if you can think it, you can have it!

Let’s start with today. Today will pass whether we do anything or not. Today will be yesterday, tomorrow, so tomorrow, let’s not say, "We should have done something yesterday." I choose to do something today so tomorrow I can say, "This is what I did yesterday!" That, in itself, will build my self-esteem: accomplishment! What else builds self-esteem?? For every one it will be a little different, but these are things everyone can profit by doing.

1. First and foremost - take care of you! No one else can or will. Do something for you, today, that makes you happy. To me - getting a manicure is doing for me - for you, it may be shopping or a bubbly tub! (You guys are on your own - I have no idea!) Look yourself in the mirror and say something nice about yourself - You have no problem moaning about the fat stomach or the straight hair, etc., so instead, focus on something good - your smile - great legs - pretty teeth! Forgive yourself for not being perfect! (But remember, God made you with a perfect plan for you: Peace, Love & Joy, every day!)

2. Have a plan for the day. Sure enough, if you have nothing planned, chances are nothing will happen, just like you thought. You say, "I plan too much and never get done." Well, better to plan too much and get half done than to plan nothing and get it all done - nothing! Right????? You have a choice every day as to what you will do. If you hate your job, make a plan as to how to get a new one. What do you want????? Go get what will make you happy! More money? Does that mean you need more education? Then go to school. Make a plan and start with today! Just do something!

3. Don’t do things that make you feel bad and don’t compare yourself to others. We all have different talents and abilities. If you can’t skate, don’t go skating unless you’re taking a class to learn. Stick to the things you do best. If you’re a great cook - then cook and take it somewhere for a compliment. Don’t hang around people that criticize you. Seek a set of your own "cheerleaders," better known as "friends." Not everyone will like you, but that’s their problem. Don’t let it be yours. There are plenty of people out there. Seek those looking to build positive friendships.

4. Think on good things. You have control over your mind. Expect something good to happen. If something bad happens, it’ll be a surprise and the whole day won’t be ruined – it’ll be good till whatever happens!! If you will do this for just one day, I’ll guarantee, your self-esteem will rise! Watch what you say. You just might get it!

5. Talk about your accomplishments. Share with people your talents. Get them to share theirs with you. Brag a little - talk to people. Look them in the eyes - don’t be afraid to make contact. Be the first to start a conversation. Chances are, they are just waiting for you to speak first. Don’t be afraid to compliment. So what, if they think you like them! People will treat you the way you expect them to.

6. Be open to learning and instruction. Take a class. Read a book. Get a video on that new dance you always wanted to do. The more you know, the better you will feel about yourself.

When you feel good about you, it will show. You will attract others. You’ll be fun to be with. Someone said, "The secret of life is to enjoy the passing of time." Are you enjoying the passing of time??? I have always said, "What have you done constructive today??" I guess, it should be, "What have you done constructive today for you?" What makes you feel better about you, today??? Have you decided to be happy today????
