MUTT and JEFF again at the Swap Shop

Mutt met Jeff met at the predetermined time of Seven AM on Sunday (as there was no coin show this weekend). Parking was easy and free at that hour. In fact we met walking out of the parking lot as our timing was right on the dot.

Weather was comfortable, cool enough, but we both sported our wide brim hats. Jeff has a rust color straw one and Mutt his usual white cowboy hat.

It was not a successful numismatic day, so after three hours of exercise and Mutt purchasing a book “The Upholsterer’s Bible”, we took a break and talked for the next hour about e-bay and other numismatic stories over coffee and English Muffins.

Thursday, Mutt headed out to the flea market all by himself, again about seven AM and it was a beautiful day. The numismatic treasurers were a little better. Around eight o’clock he met briefly Harvey who was looking for his own treasurers.

First item acquired was aluminum token, about silver dollar size. The inscriptions; Obverse: NAGANO 1998 / USA/ Olympic circles, above an American Flag with ski lift holding a skier, LUGE below. Reverse: 1998 U.S.WINTER OLYMPIC TEAM / U S A / large Olympic circles / 36 USC 380 / GENERAL MILLS PROUD SPONSOR.

The next lot included four wooden nickels and a small bronze advertising token. The items came from a dresser box of the former owner who had been in the military as there were several bars of medal ribbons and first sergeant patch and some pins. The wooden nickels read as follows; No. 1- OV: 167th / NCO / CLUB, RV: GOOD FOR / ONE FREE / BEER. No.2 - OV: “Be Smart / Don’t / Start”, RV: standard reverse of Indian Head with ‘Wooden Nickel’, around above. No. 3 OV: GOOD FOR ONE FREE DRINK around, RV: standard Indian Head. NO.4 OV: GOOD FOR / ONE FREE / BEER, RV: standard Indian Head. The last item in the lot – bronze token – OV: CITY OF MARTNSBURG, W. VA., around. Hyphen dot hyphen, in the center. RV: SHOP DOWNTOWN MARTINSBURG, around with the same center design. The value of these have to be less than the dollar I paid, but the NCO club wooden nickel may be of interest to a collector of this series.

The last purchase of the day was a ”Shuttle Crew Emblem Minted Within View Of K(ennedy) S(pace) C(enter) Launches In Titusville, Florida.” Made of solid bronze. The OV: KENNEDY SPACE CENTER FLORIDA, above, FEBURARY 3, 1984 below. Center device – three astronaught images, CHALLENGER, above. BRAND GIBSON McCANDLESS McNAIR STEWART on ribbon below. RV: THE NEW ERA OF SPACE EXPLORATION, above around USA, below. Center image the Challanger at night above the earth, with a space walker tethered. The Challenger Space Craft deployed two satellites and landed February 11, 1984 after 127 orbits.

Just as the session was ending, Mutt made a great purchase. He found a small size cigar box in nice condition for a quarter. A perfect place to keep all of his new treasurers.
