Mutt & Jeff, Adventures at the Swap Shop Continued
Last week was a bad trip; hopefully this time will be better. Mutt & Jeff met at the scheduled time. Each with their wide brim hats, Mutt with his over the shoulder cloth bag, dark glasses and a small umbrella in the bag. Jeff had a bottle of H2O in a plastic bag.
Everyone was cheerful, the sky was partly cloudy. It was 6:30 AM. Mutt said he had a budget of six dollars today and if he couldn't buy coins might purchase CD’s. So as the morning progressed; the sun started to come out and the prediction was "it going to be a hot day". They each got their morning exercise. Mutt picked up some music CD's and one computer one with clip art.
Just as we were about to finish the better half of the flea market and Jeff continued to inquire for "foreign coins', one of the dealers said, "no, but the fellow over there, has some".
Jeff recognized they were common, but inquired as to the price, anyway. "Ten cents each, but if you take them all, I'll take a dollar". Mutt spoke up and said if he doesn’t take them "I will", thinking of the club program to give coins as educational to young boys and girls. Jeff had the same thought and quickly purchased the whole lot for a buck.
Since it was now 9:30 AM and getting hotter by the minute, Mutt and Jeff decided to go inside for air conditioning and coffee. The repast was refreshing, the conversation stimulating and the time soon passed to where two hours had gone by.
Mutt said, I'm going to ask the counter girl, if they have an office where lost items might have been turned in. Jeff said it would be one in a million if you are lucky. Yes, the office is up stairs in the back, so we both took a walk. Past, the Circus that was just starting. They had a big crowd and a clown with a trained dog was on stage. At the reservation counter Mutt, told his tale of woe, how last Thursday they were having coffee and he thinks he might have lost his wallet at that time, although he did not notice it until he arrived home. "What color?' black, "What was in it? department store cards, a few dollars, three small coins, no drivers license", Mutt said.
The counter attendant disappeared behind the door in the back. Jeff again said it will be one in ten thousand, if they have it. SUPPRISE!, he came out holding the wallet.. Everything (except the dollar) was in tack, cards, the three silver dimes and the purchases last week of the miniature medal and the French telephone token. Even Mutt's old draft card from 1953 was still in the wallet. Halaluya, I can't believe it, he said, as they walked away, after thanks all around. The Swap Shop must be the most honest flea market in the world.
Just to fill in for last week the miniature medal was attributed via the Internet as British copper nickel, World War II Service for the English Army (the Canadian version is in silver).
British World War II Service Medal -The reverse device shows a lion standing wanton on the body of a double-headed dragon. The dragons heads are those of an eagle and a dragon to signify the principal occidental and oriental enemies. At the top, just right of centre are the dates 1939/1945 in two lines.
"Anyone who visits Fort Lauderdale, Florida should plan to visit the Swap Shop and see the elephants too!", said Mutt, as he and Jeff left happy.
