Mutt & Jeff Rained Out at the Swap Shop
Just as Mutt approached the Flea Market, as a slow drizzle tapered off, he wondered if Jeff would show up. Signals had been set up to both arrive at 6:30 AM and if it was raining Jeff would call Mutt on his cell phone for a status report. After waiting ten minutes sitting on the edge of the car, he trooped over the pedestrian over-pass bridge to look and see if for some unusual reason, Jeff had arrived early and might be waiting on the bench in front of the market. No one was there; so Mutt retreated a little, back up on top the bridge, when his cell sounded. "Where are you", was the voice unmistakable that of Jeff. "Waiting for you on the bridge" "Is it raining" No was the answer, how about you "Sun is coming up and it looks clear". Are you coming? "Give me a half an hour" Ok I'll see you by the bench then.
So, Mutt wandered off to look for numismatic treasures. As luck would have it, there was a dealer, standing over an open case and you could see a half a dozen foreign coins. Junk, "I think" he thought to him self, seeing an Elizabeth penny, a 20 peso Mexican piece and a few small ones of no interest. Then he spotted a quarter size copper piece, which in the dim light of the partly overcast morning he could not identify. Picking up the item and telling the dealer "can't see a thing in my old age", as he took out his 16 power glass. The inscription said something about a bay and a bridge. It was a transportation token. Looking a little more in the case, there was another one. This one was about the size of an old large size American cent, with much more inscription and something about a bridge. The dealer refused the first offer of 25 cents each, then the two for a dollar, but accepted two dollars for the pair.
Jeff showed up at 7:30AM and quickly identified the TRIBOROUGH BRIDGE TOKENS as follows. First Token, bronze, 29mm diameter. Obverse: Bridge edifice enclosed in wreath at center with inscription, "Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority" around periphery. Reverse: starburst design below and bridges and tunnels listed upon starburst as follows: Triborough, Bronx, Whitestone, Verrazano Narrows, Brooklyn Battery, Queens midtown, Throgs Neck. "M" below (M-for Metropolitan transportation authority). Token in Extra Fine condition and worth the price of the toll approximately $5.00. The second the same designs but 25mm in diameter and with the following bridges listed on Reverse: Marine (for Marine Parkway Bridge), Henry Hudson, Cross Bay (for Cross Bay Boulevard). Worth about $3.00. Nice finds.

The two of them, soon set out to check out the rest of the Swap Shop, when within an hour it started to pour cats & dogs. They agreed it was coffee time and retired to the canteen.
An hour and half later it had cleared up, so the exercise journey resumed. Not much more, but a wooden nickel souvenir " Reverse=Bring this to / Henry Lee / That's Entertainment / Food Show / Radisson Center, / Miami. Obverse=WOODEN / You like to take / a picture with a / *star* / Bring this token to the / "Star-Pics" / booth. The other two tokens in the group were alike When a kid can be a kid / 1997, around a pigs head on both sides. I think this was like the larger Jordan token found on an earlier trip and sold at the club auction for $3.00.
Mutt and Jeff had a somewhat shorter day of it, do to the rain, but a good time, as it was.
