Mutt and Jeff say it is too hot
E-mail confirmations, set up the early morning appointment to check out the flea market one last time this summer. As usual Jeff was sitting on the bench at the foot of the overhead walkway at 7:00 AM. As Mutt approached, he said why don't you have a hat? The answer was "I left it at Gene's", as he pulled out an old cloth cap. We both had a bottle of water, knowing it was going to get hot.
Lots of dealers (free day at the Swap Shop), but not much in the way of numismatics.
We hadn't been there forty minutes when it started to shower. Mutt pulled out a small umbrella, which was hardly enough to cover one, let alone two grown men. So, it was time to go inside. The coffee was good and the conversation computers and coin auctions, even better.
Jeff decided to call it a day, while Mutt said he would take another walk around.
BETTER BABIES CONTEST - SEPTEMBER 1931
The find of the day was a gold plated medal BETTER BABIES CONTEST Conferred By - THE INDIANAPOLIS NEWS, around a chubby baby. The other side INDIANA STATE FAIR INDIANA SEPTEMBER 1931, around center figures of a ball player and a buffalo. In very small letters, below W & H Co. Newark, N.J.
Later Jeff recognized W & H Co. as Whitehead & Hoag, a well known medal manufacturing company of the era.
As bugs bunny would say, "That's all folks!"
