My first exposure to the live steam hobby was when I was 12 years old. It was a magazine article about the New Jersey Live Steamers. From that day on I was hooked.
I looked for more information on the hobby and located a local club, the Long Island Live Steamers, where I learned alot about the world of large scale model railroading. I was 15 when I bought my first live steam locomotive kit.
The locomotive you see below, is my first live steam model. I built this when I was in high school and purchased the kit using paper delivery boy wages. With a lot of help from my father and the use of my uncle's machine shop, I finished the locomotive in approximatley 1 1/2 years time. The scale of this particular locomotive is 1 " scale , or, 1 " on the model equals 12" on the full size locomotive. This locomotive weighs 115 pounds and is 3 feet long. |

The next picture is of my latest locomotive. This locomotive was built using only the wheels and cylinders from a supplier of riding scale railroad equipment. The remainder was made from scratch using standard bar and sheet stock and some home made castings. This engine took 8 years of scarce, spare time to build. The locomotive is in 1 1/2" scale and is 7 feet long including the tender and weigh in at 300 pounds. The photo was taken at the local library's "What's Your Hobby" night. |

Next I will be building a small gas powered industrial locomotive, sometimes called a "Critter", to help with track construction and to have a locomotive that I can use at a moments notice. Such as when visitors want to take a quick ride around the line and there isn't enough time to get the steam locomotives fired up and ready. Below is a drawing of the locomotive I intend to build.
This locomotive will be powered with a 3 1/2 horsepower gasoline engine and will have a simple forward and reverse transmission. It will be built to 2 1/2" scale (1:4.8) proportions. This means by running on 7 1/4" gauge track it will represent a narrow (3 foot) gauge locomotive. This way, even though it is a model of a small locomotive, it will actually be 60% larger than if it were modeled in 1 1/2" (1:8) scale.
This spring (1999) I started to build a private track on our property to run my trains. Click here to go to the track construction page of the Springville & Southern R.R. |
