One of the highlights for me of our visit to the Pennsylvania State Railroad Museum was this beautiful GG1 Locomotive. Nearly 20 years ago, I purchased a commemorative HO-scale model of this particular electric locomotive..
Information I have indicates that this locomotive is one month older than I. It was built in March of 1943, at Altoona's Juniata Shops, construction number 4434.
From the documentation that came with the model:
From the bronze plaque that came with the model:"Black Jack", Pennsylvania "4935",
Certificate number 0569"This certificate together with the scale model of the Pennsylvania "4935" GG1 Locomotive bearing the same number, verifies the authenticity of this limited production of 2,700 pieces commemorating the restoration of the prototype, which was dedicated on May 14, 1977. The restoration of this locomotive is a trubute to the ageless styling created by Raymond Loewy for the GG1's and to the locomotive's continuous dependable performance since the class was introduced in 1934."
GG1 4935 0569 BUILT: ALTOONA 1943 This locomotive owned by the NATIONAL RAILROAD PASSENGER CORP. has been restored by the men of the Wilmington Shops to its original Pennsylvania Railroad livery through the efforts of the National Railway Historical Society and the generosity of numerous donors. The restoration is a tribute to the ageless styling created by Raymond Leowy for the GG1s and to the locomotive's continuous dependable performance since the class was introced in 1934."
