Irvine Yard to Altoona for the Winter

Click here for my Soo Line Index On Monday, I chased both restored Soo Line steamers (Pacific # 2719 and Mikado # 1003) from Irvine Yard in Chippewa Falls to Eau Claire as they were returning to Altoona, where they will spend the winter in the UP roundhouse at the ex-C&NW yard there. Soo Line Pacific # 2719 and Mikado # 1003 Soo Line Pacific # 2719 is pushing 1003 across the bridge over highway 29 as they approach the bridge over the Chippewa River.

The green Olds convertible, lower left, is a crew chase car. The folks in the black pickup and the guy on the Harley are, like me, enjoying the sight and sounds of steam once again on the old Soo mainline to Chicago.

Pacific # 2719, Mikado # 1003 and UP GP-40 2526 At one time, four different sets of track shared the route between Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire. Now, only the ex-C&NW UP line is available for traffic. UP GP-40 # 2526 has hooked onto a pair of revenue cars and the two Soo Liners, and is making good time heading for Altoona and winter quarters.
