Santa Clara Valley Canary & Exotic Bird Club
June 8, 1975
Santa Clara High School Cafetorium
Dear Members,
The last WORKSHOP meeting was a huge success, lots of great ideas were exchanged. The meeting that is scheduled for Sunday June 8th will feature a Game Warden to answer questions (that is if Phil can schedule one for that day.) The S.B. 1766 now you can relax no restrictions on birds. The bill in no way affects bird breeders and made no change in the laws regarding birds. Needless to say the same things would have applied to birds, had we not fought it. We did affect one change in the old law. The definition of a wild animal was changed to read "not normally domesticated in this state". Under the old law a canary could have been classified "wild" now it cannot. This took 6 months to work this in.
LACY ACT Send a letter to your congressmen today, use the sample letter as a guide.
Dear Sir:
We have learned that you are porposing holding Oversight Hearings as Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Conservation and the Environmnet, regarding the Department of the Interior's proposed regulations under the Lacey Act.
We ask that you hold these hearings because we do not feel the Department of the Interiorhas given the bird hobbyists of the United States a chance to learn of these proposals. We, as a group, do not feel the Department of the Interior should be able to deny us the pleasure of birds we have kept for years in our aviaries, until they can prove that they are injurious to the environment, which the Lacey Act specifies.
