by Charlotte Le Doux.

How proud we are of our Charter Members -
Do they realize what a good organization they started?
The way they went from this place to that place -
Always finding a "spot" in which to hold their meetings.
And their early Bird Shows went from basement -
To tap room - to lodge hall - to horse barn -
Finally to the Fairgrounds and then to the High School!

Through all these changes went Joe - a Charter Member -
Working his heart out - helping everywhere.
He loved his birds; he respected everyone who
Raised birds; and always made time to stop
To answer questions from beginners or
Those people with bird problems.
His "bird know how" was to share.
His goal was to help others.
He was loved and respected by all.

We already miss you Joe - the students in school -
Your friends - and the entire Bird Club.
Be happy up there - be sure to greet all our friends for us -
and help the Dear Lord with the teenagers,
even as you did here on earth.

Bird handling tips from J.M Harris, DVM Avian Medicine course - UC Berkeley.

Get your hookbills hooked on peanut butter as a treat food then when they need medication it can be mixed with peanut butter for proper dose & time.

Emergency diet for sick/debilitated birds: General protein powder. Soybean milk product (for human baby formula). Mix to look like a thin gruel.

Need a hospital cage in a hurry? Wrap the cage in Saran wrap to cover the cage except for a small vent area on top & the door. Set cage on heating pad and raise the temperature to 85-90 degrees. Use thermometer in the cage. Note: the kind the pet shops sell for hanging in fish tanks do very nicely.

External parasites? Dust bird with Penguin downe dry D powder.

Scaley mite (Budgies, etc) use Eurax cream every other day for three weeks.

For canary feet scales: plain old Nivea skin cream.

Birds do not have saliva - so it is a waste of time to put powder on seeds.

Avitron & Giesler pet Vitamin do not alter the taste of the drinking water.

Antibiotics in the drinking water is bitter - the birds won't drink enough. Mix and put drops directly in the bird's beak.

For repair of fractured wings or legs, do not use regular adhesive tape as it is hard to remove from the feathers. Use 3M Vetrap (red not white.) Your Veterinarian can get it for you. For leg fracture repair use Curity Wet Proof.

Betadyne is o.k. for an antiseptic for birds.

As a courtesy to your birds, lightly powder your hands before handling them. They don't need human skin oil on their feathers and they resent it. Anything will do - baby powder, cornstarch, etc.

Birds need high caloric feedings during molt.
