This is Thanksgiving Month - and I am so grateful that I knew

Frank Davis and Phil DuBois

Did you know that Frank and Pearl Davis were the founders of our Bird Club? That he served as President for the first three years? That he was also a past President (and honorary member) of the Modesto Club? That he was one of the first bird breeders to use color feeding in canaries successfully? That he won with his birds time after time in the National shows? That his many kindnesses and his willingness to share his knowledge with everyone brought him deep respect from bird lovers all over the country?

Yes - Frank - we miss you

Though you spent your last years in Southern California - Phil - we all know your heart was always with our club. There is no one in our organization who has done more for our club than you. No matter what the office nor what the task, you were always willing and able. One of your greatest efforts was when you informed us of the American Federation of Aviculture and urged our full support in joining this most progressive group. Your knowledge of psittacines was so great and always available.

Yes - Phil - we miss you

Our October meeting program consisted of reports from some of our members who had attended the AFA Convention in Las Vegas.

Nickie McClatchie presented an over-all view of what has been accomplished thruout the year and how it has affected and helped us.

Glenn Mitchell combined about three lectures in his report on General Nutrition for birds. Just a couple of pointers: always use white oyster shell for your birds, not gray; any cellulose you can get into a hook-bill is good; vitamin K is a necessity for all birds.

Pat McMullen covered Dr. Harrison's speech and will be giving us a copy of his newest charts soon.

I covered Bud Rick's speech on canaries; most important point he made was that we (as bird breeders) should strive to keep our prices on male and female birds the same! This makes good sense to me, and I do hope you will all try to exemplify his suggestion.

ANOTHER STOLEN BIRD - this one, a BLUE-CROWN AMAZON from a home in Colma. There is a reward being offered. The birds's name is Oliver.

The Program at the meeting Sunday will be "Getting ready for the show" and our president urges all new members (especially) to be sure to attend. Also - be sure to check the September Newsette as it contained helpful hints in preparing your birds for the show.

The Nominating Committee will be appointed Sunday.

AND NOW - REMEMBER - THIS IS THE LAST MEETING BEFORE OUR SHOW!

Everything seems to be going along as it should. Just one or two important announcements:

Our president has arranged for us to get into the hall on Wednesday night the 26th for "SET-UP". This will certainly be much better than to have to go over on Thanksgiving night. So please - everyone - make the effort. Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 6:30. And if you all come to help, the job should be done in about an hour.

And - after the show - on Sunday - all members should stay to help clean-up. Here again - when everyone helps - the job is done in a hurry.

REMEMBER - bring a bird for the auction - bring your birds for the show - and good-luck to everyone - win - and be proud.
