Before I get into the news part of this paper, Nickie and I want to express our deep gratitude for letting us represent the Club at the recent AFA Convention in Las Vegas. There will be reports from many of the members who also attended and others will be printed in the Newsette from time to time. Again - Thank You.

Here are some subtle (and some not-so-subtle) reminders:

• Items brought for the monthly raffle must be birds or bird-oriented.
• If you do not bring food for the monthly Pot-luck, you are requested not to expect to eat there. (No money changes hands!)
• All members are asked to especially patronize the pet shops who have been kind enough to place ads in our catalogues. This is about the nicest way we can say "Thank You" to them!
• Chuck is still requesting volunteers to help on his "special project" - our club's portfolio. He needs writers, pictures, and special articles about the club from past years.

ANNOUNCEMENT - Our regular October meeting will be the 1st Sunday - Oct. 5 - in deference to the Western Biird Breeder's Pet Faire in the Hall of Flowers Golden Gate Park, San Francisco on the 11th and 12th. Many of our members also belong to that club and will be participating.

Red Factor Show Cages and Single Breeders (also to be used for the show) are now available from Howard. Please contact him immediately.

About the Show:

• Rowland showed us the trophies - they are beautiful.
• Rowland gave a complete report on appointments; if you don't know where you have been assigned, please ask him.
• Some of you still haven't seen Ruth Mitchell about your ads in the catalogue. She will talk to you anytime you phone her.
• Are you selling your raffle tickets for the $250.00 drawing?

Toni Nyquist wants to buy a Red Factor Male, or she will trade two Red Factor Hens for him.

Remember all the letters we sent to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife last month? They decided to postpone their decision on imports and licensing until after the New Delhi meeting next February! They were greatly influenced by the "multitude" of letters they received from all over the United States!

ABOUT THE FEATHER SHOW OR BIRD EXHIBITION (as it is called) Sept. 13 & 14

Thanks to Janet and John Gilleo for being so well organized.

Members are asked to bring their birds in between 8:00 and 9:30 Saturday A.M. to the South entrance of the Mayfield Mall. This door will be the only one open this early. After bringing your birds in - then park your car in any one of the many parking lots as you cannot leave it where you "unload" your birds. (There is no time limit in any of the parking lots, so you won't have to worry about moving your car during the day.)

Judging will begin promptly at 10:00.

Bring as many birds as you want. Our president urges all to enter as many baby birds as possible. This is especially good experience for our newer club members who have not been sufficiently "schooled" in the "hows" and "why's" of exhibiting birds. We have many trophies and ribbons to award, and this will take place on Sunday at 12:30.

There will be two guards on duty all day and all night. Besides the guards, the gates will be closed and locked at 6:00 P.M. Saturday and not opened until noon on Sunday. You may take your birds home anytime after 3:00 on Sunday. BUT - BE SURE TO CHECK OUT WITH THE SECRETARY!

Just a few general suggestions:

• Make sure birds are clean, feathers smooth, and toenails cut.
• Have cages clean and painted black (flat non-toxic paint).
• Get your birds acquainted with cage before show time.
• Cover bottom of age with plenty of seed to feed your bird.
• Get your birds to the show in plenty of time for the Show Secretary to check them in.

I'm happy to report that Ed Schmalz is finally home from the hospital. And would you believe - he's talking about returning to Work!

And you do remember Mark Quieto - that good looking red-headed policeman? Well - while on duty a couple of weeks ago he wasn't going fast enough (?!?) in his squad car and someone "gave it to him". He wound up in the hospital but is O.K. now. (no one ever told me what happened to the one who hit him!)

But I do have some more sad news this month.

The SON of Bill and Connie Resnick was recently killed in an automobile accident. I'm sure that they know that our deepest sympathy is with them.

And our dear Virginia Cureton passed away on August 19th. Once again - we wonder WHY. She was so beautiful, so active (even with her crutches), always so willing to help the club, and such a brilliant mind; and how she did love her birds! We already miss her - but we know that now she is "without pain". Thank you, God, for letting us know her.

AS A FINALE -

I think you will all be glad to hear that this year's Show Catalogue is to be dedicated these friends who have now passed away.

This is a RED ALERT - JUST IN THIS MORNING (Saturday) from our AFA Coordinator!

An emergency - check all your birds - any birds which have been purchased from the Pet Farm in Florida which is owned by a Mr. Levinne - or any birds bought from a dealer who gets birds from him - could be contaminated! Could be Pacheco's Disease or could be Newcastle. If in doubt have your birds checked by a veterinarian - immediately. At any rate - isolate them from the rest of your flock now.
