The WELLS Family of Exploits Islands, Newfoundland

My mother, Margaret, is the daughter of Albert and Bessie Wells who resided most of their lives on Swan and Exploits Islands (also known as Exploits-Burnt Islands) at the head of the Bay of Exploits on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. It was there that an immigrant from Christchurch, England, James Wells, came to settle in the New World three generations before. In fact, one of the only full-time residents of the former economic center for the area is a decendant of James, his great-great grandson Richard Wells.

Prior to settling at Exploits, James went to live with an uncle at Leading Tickles or Point Leamington. There he met and married Sarah Rowsell. They are both buried at the old Church of England cemetary in Lower Harbour, Exploits. James and Sarah had eight children we have record of, and they went on to establish the Wells clan throughout Newfoundland, and beyond.
